Custom rifle cost going to the moon , when does it end ?

Just finishing up getting a custom done... First full custom I've done, and sold 3 rifles to help pay for it. I used to always think it was crazy to spend that much on a build, but realized I generally only took a few rifles out of the safe to use, so why not downsize and go up in quality. Spent way more than I ever thought i would or probably needed to, but what the hell, wanted one nice full custom.

300 PRC
Defiance Tenacity
Triggertech primary
Proof CF barrel, muzzle threaded
Mesa precision altitude stock
BDL bottom metal w/ wyatts kit
PVA jet blast brake
Chambered, threaded, bedded

Going to be out the door for $3,193.....

But then again my gunsmith doesn't care about marking up parts. I think some of the "Big Boys" have a markup on parts which drives up the cost quite a bit. Always found sourcing my own parts is the most cost effective way. I could've cut quite a bit off scouring the classifieds as well, lot of good deals on used parts on the interwebs.

Building now a 6.5PRC:

Defiance Tenacity action-$775
Proof Research Carbon Barrel- $625
Mesa Precision Carbon Fiber stock- $550
TriggerTech trigger- $150
Hawkins BM- $175
Mag x2- $130
YHM muzzle brake and Suppressor- $600 and Stamp $200
Smith paint and assembled for $750

Not to bad considering what you're getting. Optic budget $1200-1500 and undecided at this point.

And spend that 40 hours practicing with their rifle instead of load development.
But you can't beat good shooting From a good shooter...practice is worth more then the $12k gun.

Isn't load development practicing ! I know for me it is !!! Hundreds and hundreds of rounds Ladder testing at 600 for all my projects really concentrating so I don't skew the results !! Not to mention all the $ I save at a therapist!!😂😜

I get it , some people don't want to do all that or more importantly don't know how to ( tune ) a load for a specific gun let alone set up a chart and optic then validate ( then there is tweaking the validation if needed ) so the idea of a out of the box rifle is attractive for ALOT of people And if you can justify it then hammer down !

This is my opinion.
Shooters, actual shooters, guys who demand pinpoint accuracy, and are always striving and pushing themselves to be better, know the values of rifles. They have learned through experience when minimum is not enough, and when overkill brings little to the table. So posts like this get crossed up easily.
Take hunters, many levels here, but purists, guys who demand excellence once again struggle with guys who come to the range with their 1K capables and see them need a 3 shot minimum to hit a 1.5moa target. It will never sit well, but is magnified 10 fold if that rifle happens to be a package. This becomes even more of a critical situation in the field if a shooter and said package fail in front of people in the know.
I am guilty as heck here, for it doesn't matter if it is the rifle itself, the ammo, or the shooters dedication to the task. It becomes easy to point a finger at the seller, but common sense says it is deeper than just the buy in of a package. Heck, a certain pct could be attributed of the failure to buy enough of one lot of ammo, which can be hard to do based on pricing.
There are certain builders who's products I have never witnessed flounder, but in my case, if I witness one package rifle not perform to the costs associated with it, I form an opinion quickly, while knowing that this is wrong essentially.
You shoot long enough, have enough rifles built to your specifications, in my personal opinion, your view narrows considerably on what becomes acceptable. So to me, just buying a package means to some extent that you are settling on what is available, and throw in the cost, it will never be a route I will take.

I just saw a new release of a highbred big game rifle from probably THE big boys in the industry . The cost including a 2500.00$ optic is 12500.00$ . I have done my fair share of buying things that I knew were a bit out of the ( practical or common sense range ) because I just wanted it but not to the tune of 12500.00 lol !! To be clear I'm sure it comes with 100 rounds of custom ( tuned ) Ammo for it and we all know the work that goes into that although the load development is the steepest on the first ( set up ) then after that it's probably a little more cookie cutter . I'll be the first to admit these are some of the baddest rifles to ever hit the planet and the detail and designs are AMAZING for sure! I feel a custom build with a premium barrel , stock , trigger , action and optic around 5-6 k is ( fair ) but I also have some factory rifles with a proper tuned load that shot at .250 or better . One in particular I have is a .093 5 shot group at 100 yard and it holds that moa pretty close to 800 so far , I knew they shot well but I'm still on cloud 9 with that one and I promise, that's not the norm for me on factory guns !!
I know these factory rifles most likely will walk significantly more threw a 20 shot string then these premium guns will of course but for most hunting rifles that's not necessarily going to be needed . I have set up several rifles for friends that just want a hunting gun with factory Ammo . I set one rem 700 up with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14 and found THE factory Ammo that it liked ! On most of these projects I'm able to find Ammo that will shoot .500 or better all for 1800.00$ and it just about holds that all the way to 800. I'm not poking at custom builders ,it is a true art , I'm just asking what your feelings are towards these 10-12000.00$ guns and where the future is headed ( and I'm not talking about 50 bmg or 375 cheytac type guns) With all the modern machining practices, factory rifles have came a long way for sure ! I think we are going to see a swing in the market for gun builders to produce a gun that is a (budget) version . I think these are selling now because of the craze we are in now kinda like in 2008 when desil pickups were grocery getters during that craze that blew up , then desil hit 5.00$ gallon in Comifornia and they were dumped quick ! Is it just me or are these prices crazy ..... but soooo bad a** of a rifle !!

I don't know about you, but I prefer my built guns either unfired or test fired once if either one works for the smith building it. I wouldn't want some yayhoo from the factory or whatever blasting 100 rounds or whatever through it.

Without reading the whole thread can you mention here or by PM the rifle that you're talking about?

More power to the guy that wants to spend that much on a rifle.

I don't and won't. My most expensive custom is my 257 Weatherby I had built in 2011. I have under $5k in it.

  • Stiller TAC300
  • McMillan Remington Hunter stock pillar and glass bedded, hydrodipped
  • Kriegerbarrel,fluted/threaded/Duracoated/Crux suppressor mount
  • Jewell Trigger
  • Oberndorf BDL bottom metal
  • Talley 1 piece lightweight rings
  • Swarovski Z5 5-25x52 BRH scope
  • Swarovski threaded scope covers
  • Swarovski neoprene scope cover
This gun shoots in the mid to high .2s with factory Weatherby ammo. Why would I spend 3 times the $$? I'm sure the Gunwerx rifle has a better scope mounting system and a more expensive scope, but I don't think it will perform any better.

$12500.00 ?? Welp, you aught to spend some time in the Skeet Game... Guys run around with $17k to $90+ shotguns.. All the golden chickens you ever could want.. I have shot some fine shotguns.. The one I have, I got about $4500.00 in it, that's peanuts.. If you have a great income and you spend 40K on a gun you have taken $40k cash and turned it into 40k in a firearm.. You still have the 40k.... You spend 2k on a gun you have $1850.00 ...

I agree ! But remember the rules of Supply and Demand. If they don't sell that equipment, they will be forced to drop the price, or drop the rifle completely and go out of business.

@bigngreen I just priced my build out... GW $5,995 apples to apples with $3,193 built locally
Does your local pay his DOD licencing and is insured?
Im at $4795 for the basic rifle like I would ship out as a local Smith, my profit margins keeps the light on that's it, no extra for R&D or inventory or dealing with basic reloading question. You add up the real value in a product like Gunwerks and there is way more than a local smith can supply at their prices. I used to think they were way over priced too till I tried doing it!!
