Bear protection article

I'm not sure I followed all the authors conclusions, however; I carry both spray and a handgun, have not needed to spray or shoot any bears so far this summer. Yesterday I had 8 grizz within 50 yards, today I'm flying to a creek with a lot of bears on it.
Hope the fishing is good. Stay alert, prepared and never take the **** things for granted. Discounting brown /grizzlies just because they are well fed is stupid. Kodiak bears are among the best feed with an evil reputation.

I had read those findings before and was skeptical that bear spray could be more effective than bullets. I just chalked it up to people not carrying enough gun for the job. Evidently the studies have been presented in a misleading way, who knew? You won't catch me walking around in bear county with a can of hot sauce. I do, however, carry a Glock 40 10mm loaded hot with Lehigh Extreme Defense solid copper bullets.

With the recent (last weekend) bear attacks in Montana, the bear spray does seem to work! At least some of the time. Of course, the same can be said for bullets! :) memtb

That was about 40 miles from me as the crow flys, last week a rancher had wolves kill 7 calves and when they flew it there were 9 grizz with in a half mile and 20+ in the area. It's infested with bears!!
I don't know any one who has been rolled in that unit that has even heard it coming let alone got their gun or spray out. There about as many times the spray seems to work as it doesn't, last year someone was killed and when they got the bear it had spray all over it.
The grizz are out of control, if there were this many of them here when Lewis and Clark came through they wouldn't have made it!!

I guess for me it is what direction is the wind blowing? Trying to spray upwing would not work so well. I have a 6 inch 500 in a chest rig I would have a lot more faith in.

I live by GNPark and alot of bears have been deterred with spray.Out bow hunting a buddy usually has or we both pack pistol.Back when local warden was releasing a problem bear.Lou Kiss, might spelled wrong, they are parked on a bridge, newperson there. He maybe cowboy it up cuz heas up on cage and pulls door up.That grizz got out about one step, and pulls whole works out of truck. As guy goes down he unloads on bear with his 357,dead bear.Photos in local paper.

sp6x6 When I was a Wildlife Officer we got a magazine with article about one such incident. They had a new trap built out of aluminum. Had not secured the trap in the truck. It was so light it came out of the truck as the bear came out. The officer was on top of the trap lifting the door, As the bear came out the trap, the trap and officer fell on the bear. It went down hill from there.

Im sure same one.Trap wasnt strapped. No it didnt fall out, soon as bear exit,he not in good mood and warden on trap and he pulled whole works out.Was in paper as news was covering release.Policy changed after that.Somebody find that old video,Jonkles study grizz, yellowstone I think. That grizz charges station wagon at full speed, and HEAD BUTTS it.
