20” 300 PRC

I feel the short barrel on a prc is a mistake. Big cartridges need a long enough barrel to burn the powder. A 24 inch 300 weatherby is no better than a win mag. 300wsm if you want a short barrel. The short fats are more efficient and like faster burning powder.

I'd love to hear your explanation of this. A 24" 300 Weatherby will still outrun a 24" 300 Win Mag by a good margin.

The only thing you give up with a shorter barrel is velocity. Good luck with the project.

My experience. I had a 300 weatherby with a 25 inch hart. 3150 with a 180. I had a 300 Winchester with a 24. 3180. Different barrels can make a big difference. I had a factory 338 rum. 2850 with a 250 was it. Rebarreled it with a hart and then got 3000. Another 24 inch west german 300 got 31 even. You be the judge. Now I have a 27 inch lilja 300 roy. 3150 with a 200 partition.

I had a customer with a brand new 2506 in a 700. Wanted me to cut it short for a can. I told him I do not recommend less than a 22 on a 2506. Nope I want it cut to 16. OK I learned a long time ago not to argue with the smartest guy in the room. I will not lose anything with the muffler on. OK budo_O When he came and git it we put it on the crono. 2780 with a 100 gr. Congratulations buddy. Now you have a new shiny quiet 250 savage. Then he was ****ed off at me!!

This is a great example of the causation or correlation argument.

First of all, I am not necessarily a fan of shorter barrels, except for when a suppressor is used.

Second, we are truly blessed with the advent and innovations in new powder formulations which can turn the well accepted world of older information on its ear. Staying up with the new innovation can be daunting especially considering the costs involved. But in order to stay current in our opinions, we have to invest in the advances as they present themselves. In that spirit...

I've been working with 20"-22" barrels for the last few years only find that even with the 20" barrels, a cartridge such as the 300 PRC shooting the 215 Bergers burns all the powder in that short barrel easily. Now the velocities are restrained to say the least but that needs to expected and accepted when short barrels are requested. It is not necessarily a handicap either since there is plenty of velocity and energy available when that bullet reaches 1,000 yards.

Enjoy the process!;):D
