Wife bought me a new Savage!!

What do you plan on doing with the rifle? That will dictate what you should get for bullets, but the 140 eld-m is a pretty universal bullet. Capable of hunting medium game and varmints as well as an excellent target bullet for out to about 1300 yards depending on your speeds.
It will be my 300 to 500 yrd deer and hog gun.

You made a very good choice with the Savage. I'm running 130 grain Accubonds out of all 3 of my 6.5's for whitetail. For some reason, the ogive profile was more suited to the throat on my Norma. At any rate, for my 6.5 Creedmoore, I'm currently using RL-15 with very good results.

Get her a 6.5 Grendel in either a bolt or AR in return.

She'll enjoy shooting it -- and you might have to work harder to outshoot you inside of 500 yards!

If you are only going out to 300-500 yds you may want to drop down to lighter bullets like to 100-120 grn as another member said. Punch them into a ballistics program. Most of the time the faster bullet does better out to 400-600 yds for wind and drop and after that the heavy high bc bullets takes over. Rl-16 and h4350 are the powders most prefer.

My wife (and no yall can not have her ) View attachment 129468 bought me a new savage 10 sr le rifle in 6.5 creedmoor. Can't wait to put some rounds down the tube even if they are only break in rounds.
WOW~! you better take care of her!!! I use the 140 gr Hunting VLD w/ H4350 Good anything round! Enjoy! Also like you I'm a 308 man; in that i use the IMr8208XBR and the 198 Hunting VLD.

I have a 6.5x308 wild cat from years before the 260 Rem came out. Also have an extremely accurate Savage model 16 in 260 Rem. I realize you said 6.5 CM but the two rounds are very similar. The 260 holds about 1.5 grs more powder. Insignificant in the field. Using the Barnes 120gr TSX @ 3004 FPS both have taken several elk with complete penetration. Assume yours will be for deer. Since the late 1960's I have been using the Sierra 6.5 120gr for deer. These are mature muley buck's. This bullet cartridge combo has been deadly. My powder of choice has been Win 760/ H-414. Same powder different label. For heavier bullets a slightly slower powder might be better. If lighter recoil is desired a bullet like the Nosler 100gr partition or Barnes 100gr TTSX also deadly on deer , just cost more. As to the muzzle brake I would take it off. To many shooters over the years have had permanent hearing loss due to them. Just shoot one time & forget to use hearing protection & you or your wife can have hearing loss forever. Be aware.
