New Hornady 6.5 PRC

Brent at Western precision put this 6.5 PRC barrel on for me a couple of weeks ago and finally giving it a try. Simply fantastic work. 1:7.5 twist 26" barrel on my old 300WM Tikka action. Holland quick discharge brake with 0.015 bullet clearence. PRCs load and chamber perfectly from the 300 magazine with no modification. Has only fired 12 rounds so far but with 55.5gr of Retumbo it fired this 1 1/2" or so group at 300 yards at 2920 fps with the new 150 SMKs (still looking for pressure; started at 54gr, going up 0.5gr/3 round groups, with all grouping 1/2 MOA or less). Weighs 12 lbs scoped and loaded and easily held on target with practically no recoil. Will get a ladder test going and see where it is comfortable over the next few days, once I max it out.

Ran a ladder test today with the 6.5 PRC using 150 SMKs at 300 yards. Was almost too breezy from right to left but was able to find a likely node around 2985 using 56.4 to 57 gr of Retumbo. Still has no pressure at 3020 using 57.5 but I don't need any more velocity and recoil was creeping up. Will just stay at 2985.

What are options for magazines at max OAL?
Uploaded a couple of pictures that might help. 150gr SMK and 56.7gr Retumbo still leaves room in the case. The PRC is loaded in a M70 270 WSM. I lengthened the magazine about 1/8" to give me more room for the 170gr Berger's but it looks like there is enough room to fit in a stock M70 WSW magazine at the COAL we are using (3.01"). The COAL for the Hornady-loaded ammo I believe is around 2.8"

New Podcast out on Gunwerks. Its all about the 6.5 PRC. Definitely worth listening to. It answers the why on developing the cartridge in the 1st place and why the 6.5 x 284 wasnt working well for factory ammo. I wasnt even a 6.5 guy but bought a 6.5 Creedmoor X Bolt that is absolutely stupid accurate. I got a load that actually clover leafs at 200 yds. Im now a believer in the 6.5. I think the PRC will be replacing my 7mm RM.

I agree, this is a good listen. While I'm likely to remain a 6.5x284 die-hard, Arron Davidson's experience and views on the 6.5 and effectiveness as a hunting cartridge, IMO, is quite extensive. My original(and current) 6.5x284 loads were based on his work several years ago, prior to his affiliation with Gunwerks.

Is anyone seeing benefit or harm in going to a 7.5 twist barrel?? I'm leaning toward the 7.5 with a 27" barrel and merely looking for pros and cons.

I am running a 7.5 twist on the 6.5 PRC to cover >150gr if needed. Have not tried anything <140gr but this rifle is shooting everything I put in it. I put a new scope on it yesterday and sighted it in with the 143 ELD-X. I already had the dope for the ELD-X and it was a calm morning so it ran it through the range. First shot hits on every plate out 1200yards (500, 750, 1000, 1200). I took a shot at 2000 and saw no dust but didn't drive out to check it. At the end came back to where I sighted in at 300 and added one more to the 1" group already on the target. I don't think you will regret going with a tighter twist. 57.7gr of Retumbo going 3020 and can watch the shot hit the target. I have the ELX-Xs touching the lands and there are no pressure signs. Have not had a chance to hunt with it yet but it is going out for elk and hopefully deer this year. Been really pleased with this setup.
