New Hornady 6.5 PRC

I think the key is in the statement "sensibly designed compact package" in Hornady's description of the new cartridge. To me that means that they saw or were afraid of seeing problems with a fat WSM style rebated case even if very low occurrence. That's just how corporations are now since failure rate is measured in ppm these days. Besides, a 6.5 WSM or similar cartridge would be nothing new and they were apparently able to accomplish their goal (~3k FPS ~140 gr) without going fatter. I think the barrel/rifle makers are probably just early adopters that they got to sign on to help support the release.

morning, wildcatting is amazing. 260AI, 6.5 Rem. mag., 6.5x55AI, 6.5x06AI, 7x57AI, 280AI, 7x08AI and a few more. All of these calibers r built off passed or existing cartridges.

I bet it's RL26

I think maybe something in the 4831sc burn rate, the PRC and Saum are about 3-4gr apart in capacity and a go to load for 6.5suam is 61gr H1000 and 140 bullet.

I think George at GAP was using something like 59-60gr of RL26 with a 143 in his PRC this last hunting season.

I just chambered the PRC on one of my personal Proof Research barrels. (24" 1:8 twist)
Purchased the reamer from PTG.
They had three reamers in stock, and the drawing said the reamer was produced for the new factory ammo... HA!!!
Factory ammo is 2.950 COAL
The reamers throat was .030 short of Ogive on the 143 ELD-X factory Ammo, so I had to use a unithroater to gain the .030, plus i went another .030 for a total of .060.
So right now the bullet only has .030 jump.
I have an email in to Hornady to see what they are throating their chambers.
Velocities were in the 2950 range, but showed slight pressure on the case head.
I have only shot a total of 11 rounds, and am stopping testing until i hear from Hornady.

Any word back from Hornady on this? I have a barrel and I'm waiting on an action to build mine but would like to see what they say before we start any machining.
