Your Favorite Elk Cartridge and Why?

is tissue destruction vitals ? if so I agree. If its soft tissue I dont agree. shooting a elk in the hind qt will cause lots of tissue damage but you will still loose it.

But of course... Wouldn't do much good to shoot one in the shin... LoL.

Though I did shoot a deer in the bond quarter once. Killed it. Hit the major artery running down the leg. It went 10 ft and died. So, in that case, the tissue destruction that got the major artery worked for that scenario.

Well I am glad he was "not" gay, ha. As a Minister, I have never met nor ministered to a gay person who was truly happy. They are to be pitied really. Getting back to cartridges, while I never had an issue with headspace and a standard Whelen, I "did" have a big problem with both the 9.3x62 and the .404 Jeffry. I like that sharp shoulder/straight taper on the Whelen Ackley, in fact, I can't remember the last time I had to trim one! Bear in mind, I have been using some of my brass since 1995! Shabing! Love that big, fat bullet that just chops a big hol;e through tough skin and muscle!

I have Killed Elk with my 300 RUM (180 grain accubonds), 30-378 why mag 200 grain, this year I am going to shot my 7MM STW with 185 grain VDLs.

My favorite is my 338 Win Mag with 210 Barnes bullets.

300 RUM with 230 Berger's at 3000. Exceptional hydrostatic shock, very accurate, small wind drift, and is capable at 1000 yards.

If it's a bull tag use 30-338mag and if I draw late cow tag use 30-06 or maybe 35 WhelenAI.

7mm Rem Mag with either a 160gr Accubond or a 160 gr TSX... Though I would really like to try out the new 28 Nosler!

Whatever I have at the time (from .270 AI with 175 to .338 WM with .250) of the hunt; have a proven bullet performance (penetration, expansion, etc ...) for elk, propel it with enough KE at point of impact to humanely harvest an elk (my unwritten rule of thumb is 1500 ft-lbs) with a well placed shot (follow-up the shot as required/necessary) on vitals ... and bingo you have yourself some mighty fine eats. gun)

My go to is a 280 AI with the 168 Berger Hybrid Hunting with some Retumbo pushing it at 2850 has worked for me.
