Wildcat bullets consistency and accuracy!

Re: Drop tests and some groups with 169.5 wildcats. ( with pics )

Distantfoe,

Don't want to hijack 7RUMloaders post so I will keep this quick and simple.

The initial three Allen Mag rounds are the 257 Allen Mag, 6.5mm Allen Mag and the 270 Allen Mag.

The 257 and 6.5mm versions are based on a full length 338 RUM case with the shoulder sharpened and body taper reduced to very minimum. Case capacity when filled to the case mouth with the fine ball powder WC872 is in the 118 gr range.

The 270 Allen Mag, by far the easiest to form is based on the full length 7mm RUM case(0.100 longer then the 338 RUM) and again with the Allen Mag shoulder configuration. This round has a case capacity filled to the case mouth with WC872 of 125 gr compared to 117 gr for the 7mm RUM parent case.

The 257 and 6.5 Allen Mags have slighlty more case capacity then the longer full length 7mm and 300 RUM cases.

Here is a simple performance listing for the rounds with general bullet weights used in my 30" barreled Extreme Sporters:

257 Allen Mag

100 gr......4090 fps
130 gr......3650 fps
142 gr......3500 fps
156 gr......3350 fps

6.5mm Allen Mag
100 gr......4100 fps
120 gr......3800 fps
140 gr......3550 fps
155 gr......3375 fps
169.5 gr....3200 fps

270 Allen Mag
130 gr......3850 fps
169.5 gr....3380 fps

YOu will see some unusual bullet weights for these rounds. Yes 156 gr 257 bullet is correct!!! One of the aspects to these rounds that produce such amazing extreme range performance is the custom bullets Richard Graves or Wildcat Bullets has designed specifically for these extreme performance wildcats. They are also designed for use on game up to large deer as well. Here is a list of the BCs I have gotten from testing his bullets over 500 and 1000 yards:

257 100gr BCFBHP..........0.450
257 130gr BCFBHP..........0.550 J-4 jacket
257 130gr BCFBHP..........0.520 Heavy Jacket
257 142gr ULD RBBT........0.780
257 156gr ULD RBBT........0.820

270 169.5gr ULD RBBT......0.750

This summer there will be a fourth Allen Mag joining the group. This will be a 7mm version based on a different parent case. Performance should easily top what the 7.21 Firebird from Lazzeroni will produce. Richard is also hard at it designing bullets for this new monster 7mm. He has sent me prototype bullets that are a 200 gr ULD RBBT with an expected bc in the mid to high .9 range!!

We are looking to get 3200 fps with this bullet in a 30" barreled Extreme Sporter rifle.

These are all designed for the specific purpose of long to extreme range big game hunting and as such they offer barrel life long enough for a lifetime of big game hunting for even the most active big game hunter.

If you would like more details on the rounds such as pictures and information on the rifles and fild testing and range testing results with these new rounds drop me an e-mail at:

My bad the 4.5x14 is on your 7mag. Just too many guns and scopes to keep up with! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I couldn't remember what Dougs 300 winnie had? I see he also joined here as Bigg300.

Kirby I'm not worried about a little hijack but Len might be! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

distantfoe you will have a hard time trying to find better people to work with on a project than Kirby and Richard!
They both will help you any way they can and usually have some ideas that you hadn't thought of that will make life a little easier. Just my opinion of them!

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

Kirby have you tried the WC860 powder? About the same burn rate? WHats the diff? I know one is new and the other is pulldown. I ordered some WC872 to try so I will post my findings on it when it arrives.
Do you have any starting points for the 7RUM with 140 and up bullets??
It says use H-870 or AA8700 data is that correct or should I use some lower starting points?? Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks again!

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

I am working with WC-872 in the 300 RUM and I have found it to be slowwer than H-870 I have so far exceeded the top H-870 load data with 180 grain bullets by 4 grains and the velocity is low I am going to continue to work up and see if I can get a velocity close to 3300 fps I get 3426 with 99.5 grains of Retumbo, only 3146 with 111 grains of Wc-872.

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

7RUMloader.

The 872 I have is substantially slower then 8700 but can not tell you compared to 870. I have always founf 870 to be a bit slower then 8700 but I personally feel this lot of 872 is still the slowest of the three but different lots will certainly vary slightly.

Starting loads for either 8700 or 870 would work great. For a 140 gr it looks like Hodgdon lists a starting load of 102.0 gr for 870 so I would start there and you should not have a problem.

With the 140 gr bullet weight you may get some increased powder fouling. Would be better suited to the heavier pills like your 169.5.

I have not shot WC860 so I can not comment on that powders burn rate comparision to WC872, sorry.

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

Jwp475,

In the 300 RUM the Retumbo will probably produce more velocity then 872 unless you bump up to a 200 to 220 gr bullet. The expansion ratio of the 300 RUM is high enough to get more velocity with the faster burning powder.

Thats does not mean that the 872 will not be more accurate or consistant which is far more important then getting the very last few fps out of a case.

Let us know where you top out at with the 872!

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

Thanks jwp and Kirby!! I will more than likely use it with the 150 and up since I have a good load now with RE25 and the 140 BT's.
Thanks again for your help guys!

My .300 has a Bushnell 4200 elite in 6x-24x 40mm.

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

I plan to work up to 115 grains this weekend and I will post my results I am not sure if I can get more than 115 grains in the case are not if the velocity is still low. My last 2 grain increase gained 46 fps so we will see if I can get to 3300 fps or not. Kirby you are right about Retumbo The speed is quite good I think

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

jwp my findings with Retubo are the same. Velocities with it are 50 plus fps faster than H-1000 and 75 to 125 faster than H-50BMG!
Keep us posted on your findings with the WC872.

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

I tried some more 300RUM loads with WC-872 I am useing federal brass and federal 215 primers with 113 grains and 180 Accu Bond velocity was 3288 fps 115 grains velocity is 3377 fps 115 grains is as much as can be gotten into the case and still seat the bullet. With the 200 grain Accu bond and 109 grains velocity is 3117 fps 111 grains velocity was 3183 fps I beleive I can get a few more grains behind the 200 grain Accu Bond and will try that load tomorrow The velocity with the 180 grains is not to bad I think

Re: Questions for Kirby or anybody else using the WC872 or 860 powders

Sounds good to me! My powder came in yesterday and I'm going to give it a whirl next week. Jeff has great service and fast shipping had it in 3 days. I will post my findings with my 160 accubonds and TSX's along with 168 SMK's and 169.5 Wildcats soon.
I hope this stuff is a solid performer so I can order in a bunch and not have to worry for a while.
Thanks for posting your results!
