I'm hiking into a lake to use as a base camp next week. I have seen some tracks around the lake, not a lot, but it is definitely used as a water hole. There are a few other springs in the area that seem to have a lot more tracks around them and I planned to get some elevation and glass these areas. I wanted to camp around the lake but now I'm wondering if I should stay away from the lake and camp up the hill a bit and just go to the lake for water and a bath. The springs I want to pay attention to are a ridge over so maybe a mile away but I can get to the top of the ridge and watch a few different springs at the same time and if I see an animal I should be able to get within 300-400 yards for a shot from an elevated position.

What would you guys do? Setup camp at the lake or shy away from it hoping to see an animal by chance.?
