Where to get my barreled action Black Nitrided

Looking for somebody who can Black Nitride my barreled action. I would prefer somebody in the Colorado Springs or Denver area but willing to ship it out if need be. Any of you have experience with somebody that does this? I've checked with the web sites of a couple of local smiths and none of them mention that as an option but I will probably call a few once they open later this morning.

I want to do this is because I have a blued action and am buying a SS barrel. The SS barrel is on the shelf in my chosen caliber whereas I would have to wait 12+ weeks for a special order blued CM barrel that may not even be the same blue as my action anyway.

The reason I chose BN over Cerakote is because I read, here and elsewhere, that Nitride/Melonite coated barrels MIGHT last longer and are easier to clean due to the hardening effects of the process. If you have evidence otherwise I am willing to listen.

I suppose I could always just duracoat it and save a bunch of money? I do like some of the camo jobs I've seen pics of.

Positively don't forget to clean the chamber before firing. I cleaned the bore but didn't clean the chamber and had to have it polished. Unnecessary frustration and expense.

The symptom was with a starting load I had to put a cleaning rod down the barrel to knock the fired case out of the chamber.

Normal turn around for me has been one week.

I got an email from Adam at H&M and he said it would be $250 + return shipping for a barreled action. Maybe you are getting a return customer discount or something? Oh well, if that is their price then that is their price. When the time comes I will either pay the $250 or go the cerakote route for $150.

Here is another place. One caveat is their tank takes an absolute maximum of 24". If you have something shorter than 15" it is $125. If you have something longer than that it is $195. 1-619-596-7444 It is titaniumguns.com

I was considering the same on my last 2 custom barrels but talked myself out of it. For $250, I'll just get another barrel ... too many excellent barrels I have not tried yet.

Yeah, I won't be spending $250 that is for sure. If it comes down to it I will either Cerakote, NSS recomended a guy down the street from his shop who charges $150 for a barrel and action. Or there is always the DIY Duracoat which is by far the cheapest.

I did a barreled action and 2 actions for 125.00. They charge 85.00 for just a barrel action.

Is it possible to do a group nitride. When I called H&M for three barrels and a barreled action they were going to charge 300. Just a thought

Since it appears you are primarily concerned with the cosmetics, be cautioned that some (possibly many) gunsmiths are either not tooled to, or are otherwise unwilling to, cut on a nitrided barrel (surface is "too hard" after nitriding). So if you are thinking to set back the barrel or to cut on the muzzle end at some point during the life of the barrel, stay away from nitriding.

wait until your all done with metal work. Nitrided barrels are really tough to have threaded or rechambered. a lot of smith won't work on nitrided barrels or actions
