Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspective

<font color="green">
Hello everybody,
My name is Fabio.
I've discovered longrangehunting.com a few months ago and I I'm sort of starting out regarding to what you guys consider "real" long range hunting.
I think I'm decently equipped with my 7RM Blaser93 with TDS Khales 3-9x42 but never dared taking shots much beyond 300 meters yet(my longest shot so far remains at a sitting fox 328m away and taken with my little roe deer stalking rifle: a 7-08 Remington Seven scoped with a 1" tube Zeiss "C" 4X36)

This was just for introducing me. Here comes a few info of little more general interest linked to the current topic:

Yesterday I went to the biggest Belgian hunting fair in Gand with my head full of all your recent posts concerning the entire S&amp;B rifle scopes vs other brands issue.
No need to mention that I had great fun comparing all the displayed scopes from all the top manufacturers in relation to Pete Lincoln's expressed controversial points of view…

The Swarovsky, S&amp;B, Zeiss and Nikon importers (ecxept for Leupold)all had about a sample of each model from their entire line displayed there for the public to play with.
I must admit that I got very impressed with the S&amp;B line since it was a brand I didn't have any personal experience with (mostly because I used to dismiss their Zenith line due to the fact that they are slightly heavier than other european brands)
Getting the opportunity to see for myself with my own eyes "and hands" makes a great difference from "on paper" comparisons.
Talking with the Benelux importer also totally convinced me that my next scope would have to be a S&amp;B.
Pete's all around Zenith 1.5-6x42 "mill flash dot wish list version" would probably be the best model for me too but featuring a TDS or P4L fein reticle since I'm not at all a rational mathematical kind of guy (I'm actually lousy with all numbers and calculations and favour a more user friendly empirical approach such as the TDS reticle concept).

The S&amp;B Benelux importer retained all my attention when he told me that the company is currently working on the development of a built in laser range finder rifle scope in response to the new
Zeiss Victory Diarange M3 3-12x56 T*
witch was also exposed and sort of "stole the show at the gun show"
Here's a pic of the beast:

I played a bit with it and must admit that the built in rangefinder is amazingly fast and accurate since the target ranging acquisition works through/with the lighted cross hair reticle centre. Reading distances on low contrast indoor "targets" at 200m was no problem. Weight batteries included is 995 g. It is not offering any ranging reticle(what a shame!) but a dialling bullet drop turret.
Listed price is 3350 € +"short" waiting list… /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I can't wait to see what S&amp;B will come up with in response to their competitors…
Here's a personal pic of a modest long range shot performed on a ram at 278m with my Khales 3-9X42 TDS

Cheers

Fabio

PS:
These are the scopes I experienced failures with:
-A swarovsky 1" tube Nova 1.5-4.5x20 A4 reticle got completely knocked out while sighting in a Tikka 9.3x62 at the range. The importers made me pay for repair despite of its lifetime warranty saying it broke down because of my "mishandling" and despite the fact it had just came back from inspection service?! !
I sold it right away because I lost trust in it : it had to go on my 416 rem mag for Africa..
- I also got rid of a Simmons whitetail 3-10x50 because of impact point inconsistency when dialling the power ring.

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Someone will have to be kind and patient enough to offer his help and tell me witch code is the right one to copy and paste to my post
I sow detailed explanations somewhere on the forum on how to perform this but can't locate them.

Under "General Discussion" is a permanent thread on how to do pictures

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

The BBC is wrong. I don't know why that occurred but that is the problem.

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Thank you for the information + for "cleaning" the mess…

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

buffalobob,

Next time, a longer tether between the beast's horns and its peg will make the shot more challenging /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Ha-ha !
You're kidding but trying such a VSRH (veryshortrangehunting.com) shot with a high magnification mil dot scope wouldn't be that easy to perform! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Like i said when some one mentioned that Zeiss laser ranger scope before..
there is better on its way, and there are more than one in the pipe line.
Artemis, welcome to the forum, its good to see a few Europeans getting on here.
I was dead against the zenith for a start, i thought that the scope form looked like a french wine bottle for queers.
but then i got my hands on a 1.5-6x42 flash dot and the performance of that scope was so outstanding i completely forgot about the queer eye for a straight guy shape. Since then ive actualy got to like the shape, the Zenith scopes, especialy with the flash dot are, IMHO the best hunting scopes currently available, the classic series aren't far behind either.
Regards Pete

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Wow ..... hold on here! You are forgetting or do not know that the Tasco's made in Japan were a great buy, They somewhat downgraded their qauality when the moved to Tiawan and their last move to China did them in. If you can find a scope made in Japan...... keep it as it is a very good middle priced scope!

Just a older guy that remembers "the good old days"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Ultra highend optics: Schmidt Bender vs. others and some perspecti

Thats not my picture, it belongs to artemis. I usually hunt down at the National Zoo. Lot more variety and you can just back the truck up to the cage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
