Is t possible, no side effect, of a smith taking a krieger rem varmint contour barrel and turning the shank down from 1.25" to the threaded 1.055 to fit the factory barrel nut? Or would it be better to lose the nut and get it on?

Thanks.

There are many reasons that I lose the barrel nut.

First they look bad, but the main reason is that you have to reduce the shank size. (when firing a high intensity cartridge and the larger the shank diameter the less the chamber expands when firing improving the extraction.

Also you have more threads and threads fits (A case where less is more).

Some people are even going to larger shank diameters (1.300 and 1.500).

It is just the way I do the Savages and have had very good Accuracy with the barrel nut gone.
