Standardizing

I'm trying to standardize my bullet (as I said in my other thread) on the 165 grain Hornady SST. They shoot fantastically through my Howa 1500 using factory and handloads (Using H4350 or IMR4350, I've only got 3 pounds of either right now) and also shoot great out of my buddy's Weatherby Vanguard S2. Ours are both 30-06's, and the bullets and powder suit both very well so far in our load development. My question is: Should I standardize on the 165 to buy in bulk for my brother's 300 WM as well? It's a Winchester model 70 (24" sporter barrel). It's a bit light for a 300 but the load data all suggests 4350 is an excellent performer with the larger case and I've shot 150's out of it a fair bit with decent results. I've yet to load any ammunition for him but I'm leaning towards the SST for him as well rather than finding a new 170-190 bullet. His rifle is for deer and elk and I've got no qualms about using my 06' with far cooler loads on an animal that size with smaller bullets so I'm not terribly concerned about bullet lethality.

Anyway was just wondering about opinions on the merits of standardized loading components for all 3 rifles.

Oh, and now I need to find some Nickel plated brass and Nosler Silvertips for my girlfriend's .270. Just because they're sexy.

In my opinion your not getting the full potential out of the 300 win with 165 grain bullets. The 300 starts to shine with the 180-215 grain bullets. I used to shoot 150 and 160 out of mine but once I switched to 180s everything got better. When I get my new barrel I'm going to try the berger 210 vld. So to sum it up, you can use the 165s for simplicity but to really get the full use of the 300 I'd go heavier. Just my thoughts on the subject.

understood. I'll dick around with a few different sizes, but factory loaded .300 is too spendy to do MUCH dicking around haha

You could use 180gr SSTs or a Hornady 190 BTSP. Both would be excellent for that 24" barreled .300 Winchester.

The 300 shines with 200gr bullets beyond 1000yrds, but if you must use 180's, then I would try either 180gr Accubonds or Ballistic Tips. I haven't found a more accurate bullet. 150's are very light for the 300 and lose their velocity very quickly.
I run 200gr Accubonds for long range, never had a problem with them, ever.
The 30-06 is made for either 165gr or 180gr pills and I would stick with the 165gr weight unless you plan on hunting big critters like Elk or Moose, then I would jump to 180's.
I'm with you, I stick to one load and bullet for each cartridge I load for and, for the most part I load heavy bullets, mostly the 'optimum' bullet weight is a heavy for calibre weight, like 200's for the 300, 225's for the 338, etc, etc.

Cheers.

I have very good accuracy out of my tc venture 3006 and 200gr. Matchkings with 53gr. Imr 4350 @ 2650fps. Sub moa I'm thinking of going to the 210smks or bergers so if it was me I would standardize 200 to 215gr. For the three rifles you won't be disappointed in the 06 with those heavies... Just my opinion
