Savage Long Range Hunter Help

I have been looking very seriously at Savage's Long Range Hunter in a 6.5x284 norma. Can anyone tell me is that a good round or not? And how could I avoid losing my barrel accuracy after 1000rds? Thanks for all and any insight you guys may have!

Yes it is a good Cartridge, after 1000 rounds improve your accuracy by just replacing the barrel gun)

I personally like my 6.5x284. As for barrel life I dont think its hard on barrels but from what I understand it is hard on the throat. Im sure someone on here can verify that or not. I try to give my barrels pleanty of cool down time between shots, I also like to keep it clean. I have roughly 200rds through mine and plan on shooting it this weekend!gun)Goodluck on the rifle, from what I hear those Savage's are some good shooters out the box.

Or you could go with a 6.5 Creedmoor in the same rifle and get better barrel life than a 6.5X284 and then you have a short action cartridge. I was debating a 6.5 Creedmoor in that exact rifle but decided to go with a ruger and boy am i glad i did! But yes the 6.5X284 is a great round, i go Creedmoor for barrel life and its cheaper to shoot. And then if you did that if you were in a pinch and couldnt reload then you can by quality Creedmoor ammo for 26 bucks a box or so. Do you reload?

Ive had great success with the 140gr VLDs and the 95 Gr vmaxs. I just got 2 boxes of the 6.5 mm hybrids and am going to put them ot the test this spring.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but what are you getting for groups and velocities with those v-max bullets? ive always wanted to try them but didnt think they would shoot well.

I have a savage LRH 6.5-284. I really like it. I'm shooting he 140 vld hunting and it took me quite a bit of load work to find the right seating depth. Which mine likes being jammed .001" into the lands. But now it shoots 1/4-1/2 Moa if I do my part. I killed two deer with it this year. An 8 and a 9 point. It did an Excellant job. Neither went more than 40 yards and I always use a lung shot, not shoulder. Left a 6" exit on one. Bullet hit a rib and exploded.

Never had that caliber but heres my opinion on the gun...

I was looking at buying a factory rifle for long range whitetail here in Pa. I narrowed my choicees to Remingtons long range model and the savage lrh. I got to the store and started checking them out. I was Very disappointed !! The savage accustock is garbage imo. The stock has that synthetic hollow sound to it. Then I noticed the recoil pad, very ugly and cheap! The pad isn't bolted on . It's made to fit the stock by it just being fed in the back. I started looking closer and could tell over time it was going to need changeed. The fit of the overall stock and recoil pad looks like somthin from China to say the least. Again this is my opinion on it. I went with the Remington long range witch has great fit/feel. I was actually leaning toward the savage before going bc I love the accu trigger and the it had a break. Boy am I glad I didn't purchase online or somthin!

im getting about 3100 fps with the 95 gr vmaxs. and i got under 1" groups at 200 yards. ive shot them out to 700 so far. and got 1st round hits on a silloutte target. they seem to perform really well. i cant wait to try them out on groundhogs this summer.

I'm sorry I'll have to disagree. My LRH is a year old, and the recoil pad IS bolted on. Although I will say the top bolt on mine came stripped. Nothing some liquid nail and a drill bit can't fix. The accustock on my LRH has an aluminum bed block that extends down the forearm quite a ways and the stock is rock solid. The only hollow part is the butt of the stock. I have not handled the Remington but my Savage has not disappointed. Especially on paper.

I have owned a Savage LRH in 6.5x284 for about 3 years. It is exceptionally accurate shooting 140 Gr Berger Hunting VLDs. Firstly, the cartridge. I have been shooting the 6.5x284 for several years. Used for hunting which doesn't require shooting hot, and in high volume sessions seen in the target competition, you will experience barrel life that is not much different, and perhaps better than many of the calibers that have the ballistic performance, and are capable of flattening medium game at 1000 yards. Recoil is light, it is easy to load,and inherently accurate. My Savage LRH and a few others I have seen are very accurate. I have shot several 5 shot groups at 500 yards that measured less than 1.5". With the brake and recoil pad it feels like a 22-250. The accutrigger is is crisp and light at 2.5#. The stock is not great but the adjustable cheek piece, and accustock system make for a good fit and stable platform. It is very comfortable for my build. I did have to relieve the forearm tip to fully float the barrel. This took 5 minutes with sandpaper. It has proven durable for hunting purposes. The barrel weight is medium heavy with about a .73" diameter. Light enough to carry and enough weight to provide enough stability for accurate 1000 yard shooting. For the money, it's a solid value for a turnkey LR rig. IMO.
