I'm thinking about getting one of the Sako A7s but I've never been around them before. What are your thoughts on these? They look an feel really good to me. Probably going to get it in either 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag. How much is the 24 inch barrel and slower twists going to hamper performance? I would like to extend my useful range out past what I feel comfortable with my 7mm-08 which is 400 yards or so. Any other rifles I should be looking at?

my 30-06 was very temperamental when it came to load development. Even after eeking out the best possible combination, the accuracy was still worse than most factory remington 700s that I own.

The A7 in .223 is the best out of the box rifle I've bought. Like all of them highs and lows exist.
Considering my Tikka's are considered a budget model, and shoot well, I'd take a chance on another. Good Luck!

I have a A7 rough tech pro in 30-06. It's sub MOA with every handload I have ran through it. It particularly likes 180 accubonds over rl16 about 2860fps... shot a 3 shot group with it today at 200yrds that was 1.120 inches. PM me if you want load data.

I've killed white tails with that gun and load from 18-366 yards ... it is one of my favorite factory rifles I have owned. This one is never leaving

hmm. best 3 shot groups.
8x57 R700 classic. 2nd load combo. .276" @ 100
25-06 CDL I wont even say how well that shoots, you wouldn't believe it. ragged hole.
.270 BDL .281 (since shot out and rebarreled)
30-06 MTN .371
300WM police .266 (5 shot)
308 Tactical .273 (5 shot)
most other Rem700's I have are not factory bbl's.

30-06 A7 Sako .575 by far best 3 shot group. (corresponds to 1.150 @200) average group .766

accuracy is subjective. to many people, there is no difference between .087 and .575 in a hunting rifle; most shooters will scoff at the idea of a 3 shot group to begin with, although I think it's a fair indicator of a lightweight hunting rifle that is seldom asked to crank off multiple shots. Bottom line, my subjective criteria for 'good vs bad' might be different than the next guy.

Have owned four sako A7 rifles 2 in 243, 1 in 300win mag and 1 in 308 all have been easy sub moa shooters. Triggers are easy to adjust right through the mag well and have mine down to 2 lbs . As with any factory rifle some shoot better than others I own remingtons as well and some that shoot exceptionally well and a couple that don't but my sakos were pretty consistant shooters right out of the box

I have owned (4) A7's, 2 in 30-06, 1 in 270 & current one in 25-06. All have shot well out of the box. Nice factory triggers, short 60 degree bolt lift and positive magazine lock-up in stock as well as feed like butter. Not much to complain about. Fit & finish are good. The 1:11 twist in the 30 cal models may cause a little stability issues if you want to shoot heavy & long for caliber bullets in it. But if using 150's to 180's you should be fine. The 30-06's I had shot fine & current 25-06 is the most accurate 25-06 I have owned out of 4 different 25-06's. Just my personal experience.

5 shots from sako a7 roughtech range
The trigger can be lightened to 1.5lbs. It's fantastic out of box quality. All I did was bed mine. The 7rm should fit the 160 class bullets nicely in the mag and 9.5twist should be fine for stability
