Reloading according to yardage

Hi all my name is Keith Fleming & live in N.H. and just started learning precision shooting with a Savage .22 mag. I am working my way up to larger calibers & reloading but for now My Savage with an Arken on top is working nicely! I am writing because as I was telling my my know-it-all ex Airforce guy neighbor about shooting he told me about "some expert shooter" he knows does his reloading so when he shoots he always aims at the bullseye , meaning he has loads that hit@ 100 up to 1000 depending on his powder ...." because he hates messing with his scope" This all sounded like a big load of " I know it all BS" but I figured I'd come here and ask if you guys have heard of this? Is it a reality? Sounds dangerous if the target is close enough! ....Thoughts?

He's full of it, plain and simple. You can't magically defy physics with hand loads, and you can't simply load a round with a particular powder charge that gives you the MV needed to keep your scope zeroed at a particular distance lol.

I had to read this about 4 times to figure out what the heck you're saying. So you have a friend that shoots from 100 yards to a 1000 yards, and doesn't hold over or dial his scope, but just increases his MV by adding more powder to stay on bullseye? Is that what you're saying? I wouldn't stand next to your buddy at the range…

That guy has no clue what he is talking about. Never listen to him again about anything shooting related.

Essentialy what you said reads to me as if he has figured out several successive Point Blank Range Loads that will get him from 100 to 1000 so all needs is the distance and he can select the right cartridge. That is impossible even with different powders and bullets.

Some folks Zero at 100 and 'hold over'. That May be what he is talking about. With the right scope and good 'dope' it is possible to not have to dial the scope out to 1,000.

I have rifles with a known PBR in excess of 200 yards and known dope enabling me to hold over to 500.

Exactly, good advice. And Bomber is a whole different critter than Bombero, I'd hate to end up on someone's watch list!

I started to reply with my ignorant wisdom then thought better of it. Simply....sounds like a unknown friend told clueless neighbor something.....clueless wants to be invited in to help you hold your rifle. There has to be an underlying motive.

Maybe this guy was a loader on a Battleship. Shooting 16" guns and putting in powder according to the range of the target. The bags of powder (cylindrical bags). He could load his cartridges with "more or less" powder for the range he wanted.
From one to three Bags of gunpowder propellent (depending upon range) are raised from the magazine in a separate shaft and rolled onto the slide. A second set of three bags for a full charge total of 6 bags is loaded to the slide and rammed home. The amount of powder "Bags" and elevation of the barrel would help hit the target.

True story I once knew a guy who was out in remote Ak and tried reloading. Long before there was internet and he had no access to books. He said he just scooped the case full and tapped a bullet in. He lived .but only shoots factory now
