Took the rifle out today to check some loads with RE-17 and the 162g Amax bullet.
The rifle: Lawton 400x, 24 in Kreiger 1 in 8 twist in JP MOR 07 chassis.
outside air temp 55 ish degrees, clear and sunny.
The loads :
Win. cases once fired neck sized
Rem 9 1/2 primers aged 15 yrs +
162g Amax seated to 2.965 with a .055 jump - an experiment to see how it would shoot if I milled the ramp to accept the Alpha 10 rnd box mag. They will take an oal to 2.965.

Started with 40.0g RE17 and ended up at 43.0g , max is 44.0g.
The 42.5 and 43.0 grouped much tighter, under .5 with the lower loads upwards to .75 ish.

No flat primers or bolt lift issues - overall happy with the loads.
My current 10 rnd box mags only accept 2.820 oal loads.

My goal here is find a load with a high bc (.625) that would shoot reliably from the new Alpha mags at 2.965. Plan to shoot to 600 yds @ paper targets.

Sorry no chrono data.

we are kinda reading the same book here, I am experimenting with the 162 gr Amax in 7mm-08 as well. All I have done is make some dummy rounds to check OAL etc. I get about the same OAL for my Tikka T3 lite seating just off the lands. MY question is to try using the 30-06 magazines for the T3 to solve this problem? Thinking this should work considering all the T3 lites use the same action and magazines they just add stops for the different cartridge lengths. I too have some RL 17 to try.

Looking to try some 162 A max projectiles in my 7mm08 as well. What velocities were you achieving with the RE17 as I am thinking about trying this or perhaps H4350.
Any advice would be appreciated.
