RAMSHOT LRT POWDER

Got 5#'s to try with my 160 Matrix in my 6.5SS. I usually run RL33 with the 160's but the LRT looks like it'd be worth a try.

Got a pressure work up loaded of LRT with the 156 and a 6.5x284 Norma.

Below is a pic of what 65 grains (my max charge) looks like in a once fired Norma case, and below that is the 156 seated .020" off in this gun, around 3.205" OAL bullet dependant. I could hear powder shaking at 61 grains, 62 grains I couldn't quite hear it, that will be right around 100% load density, and much above there starts to be compressed. No powder crunching in any of it, however it is a ball powder so probably wouldn't feel it until it was really compressed. Seating stayed consistent throughout. I loaded from 57 up to 65 grains in 1 grain increments, will report back with what I find. Also used a cci magnum primer.

Yep well its a ball powder and jas no chemical additives to help keep burn rate consistent w temp. changes.....so there will be some velocity, ES, and SD differences.

Somewhere I found from western powders it's temp change pressure and velocity and if memory serves, they said it was inline with similar type powders and consistent

Ok, shot the 6.5x284, went as follows -

Factory Savage 110 26" tube with the on/off brake and accustock

CCI 250 magnum primers
156 Berger
.025" off lands
Norma once fired brass, shoulder bumped .002"

57 - 2568
58 - 2564
59 - 2681
60 - 2729
61 - 2763
62 - 2891, light bolt lift, faint ejector mark
63 - 2910 heavy bolt lift, shiny ejector mark
Discontinued work up

I almost didn't fire the 63 grain load, as there was a MASSIVE jump from 61 to 62, and initial pressure signs showed up. Interestingly enough, as stated 61 grains was at or near 100% fill, 62 was LIGHTLY compressed, maybe like 101-103%?

On another note, this seems to be a pretty slow barrel. I also did a work up with H4831sc and Retumbo (using standard cci 200 primers), initial pressure signs (bolt lift and faint ejector mark) showed up at 2726 with H4831sc, and 2815 with Retumbo. Also, with some factory HSM trophy gold 140 VLD that is advertised at 3016 fps, it only clocked an average of 2835. I have loaded a couple other 24" 6.5x284's with shorter throats using Retumbo and the 156, and always hit 2900+ before initial pressure signs showed up, with about 1-1.5 grains more powder. This barrel seems to be 100 fps or more behind most. As most savages do, when scoped it looks like a snakes belly with all the chatter marks, I just wonder if this one is worse than most or if it's something else?

In conclusion, LRT will absolutely work in a 6.5x284 Norma with the longer throat and the 156 Berger. A better barrel would probably have hit initial pressure around 3000 or better I suspect, and may have a good useable load in the mid 2900 range.

Unfortunately, I did find a load that seems to shoot very good....a 3 grain spread that made a cloverleaf group at 150 yards with H4831sc.....going an anemic 2612-2726 fps range. More load developement to come on this rifle, but that doesn't belong in this thread.

Hope this helps!!

Shot a few today out of a 28 Nosler, 180 Berger Hybrids. Started at 87.0, went up to 90.5. No pressure signs. 89.5 Shot this group, 90.0 wasn't much bigger. Next step, take it out to 300 and see if they hold.

what were your velocities with the 28N and this powder. I am very interested in your results

Veteran where can I find this complete chart? I apologize if you've posted it before.
There isnt any complete chart.
These are all the Ba values for these
powders out of Quick Load, ie, the physical mathmatical burn rates
QL uses... I like to rank powders this way vs. using relative charts.
