O.K. here goes. I reckon I'm asking 2 questions here so please help if y'all can My buddy wants to pull bullets from 26 nosler 142 grn ablr factory loaded nosler ammo and load with 124 hammer hunters!! Yes I know I would not do this but he wants to know opinions. I say throw powder out and use us 869? Maybe retumbo ? I've been told to try r 26,7977,or 8133. What y'all suggest?

That would be a question for Steve at Hammer Bullets as to which powder to use. I think we would all agree to throw the factory powder out as no one but the factory knows what type of powder is in them. I would also want to size the neck and start over with the correct neck tension.

That's where I was at with it thanks

QL says US869 and 7797 would be ~200 FPS slower than Retumbo. 8133 about 100 FPS slower. If you have the Retumbo I'd run that. Projects hitting pressure right around 100% case fill, which is where I try to keep my Hammers at - light crunch on the powder column when seating. RL26 might work but would be an 80-85% case fill and not what I'm looking for under that type of bullet.

So powder runs lets say $60 a lb delivered and for a 26 nosler you are going to get about 85 loads per lb or $.70 per load. So is it worth the risk of screwing up for less than $1 per round, I think not.

If you have the financial means to purchase a 26 nosler rifle and the appropriate scope (a likely minimum of a $2000 package) I think you can afford throwing away $.70 per round.

There is no way of even knowing if the powder in the 142 factory load is compatible with ~125 grain bullet. There is a chance it is but there is no level of certainity.

Totally agree thanks y
All you really have invested is a new primer at that point. Just as well shoot them.
