I was self employed and did outfitting so it was all a tax write off for my car lot so I hunted deer and guided for 3 months for fun and taxes. I had 3 personal steel ranges on the way to work tha I shot at daily. Then PRAIRIE DOGS! With 338s and coyotes year round. I had a bunch of ground to manage and hunt. Really blessed to hav done it. Family has sold all of the land and they stuck a defibrillator in the wrong side of my chest so I can't even shoot anymore. Sucks. But it was truly epic while it lasted and I often forget most people don't get a chance to do something like that.

Well I 100% understand you thinking I'm nuts. My situation was pretty unique. I just wanted to hunt and shoot as much as possible and I made it happen. Of course I was incredibly blessed with family and business connections that let me do it. I was in the field at least 4 or 5 hours a day the whole year and during the fall and winter I was out all day every day. I miss it. That's why I'm on here because I can't do it anymore. I don't even enjoy "regular hunting" now and I'm not supposed to shoot. Yuk. Oh well I did it while I could my health is so jacked now I've been dead twice so I guess it's lucky I can even talk a those days.

defibrillator... oh my... I guess you're still young? Cardio, diabetes, oncology, so many people with serious health problem these days, and many are not even being in their fifties.
Good to know that at least you've had that hunting haven before having this kind of health issue. I wish you good luck.

I'm 56. Had two fatal heart attacks and they wouldn't let me leave hospital without defibrillator during the COVID pandemic. Kind of a nightmare. Coma for a month it was rough. Thanks for the kind words.

MT-JONAH mentioned "This ain't Rokslide." It d**n sure isn't, a good example being the Q&A conversation above. And why I thoroughly enjoy our respectful community in this Forum & the "privilege" of being a member here.

Back to the subject...

1. Toddc.......great story. Something a bit new for many (all?) of us. Thanks for sharing it. Definitely wish I could have been there with you one time. I for one would like to hear your # 1 all time best hunting memory with your "armory." :cool: All of us here wish you the best.

2. OP....I vote for the .270 Win with a Partition. Yeah...some better, some not, but time & time again, "just right."

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a 6.5 PRC. Low recoil, high velocity if you reload, great factory ammo. My wife shoots one, it's a Tikka t3. I'm actually thinking about getting one for myself. I have a 300 WSM and a 7prc. I love the 6.5 prc. She's killed 5-6 elk with it, numerous deer. It's plenty capable of killing anything in the lower 48 fast and effectively.

The 270 WSM died for a reason. It didn't do anything the 270 Win didn't. Sure you get 125 FPS more velocity, but that doesn't help a ton with slow twisted barrels.

Buy a 270 Win or 6.8 Western. At least with the Western you can shoot heavy bullets.

The technical term for this is "Tractability" which is a function of the bullets dynamic stability. This is a problem I've been fighting with .308-168's being driven fast, it's been such a frustrating issue I've moved away from 168's entirely. That said, the geometric and dynamic stability is a complex subject and at least in my experience comes down to magic numbers in terms of length/diameter ratio, but it's really driven by the weight distribution and rotating inertia.
