Do it all with the lowly 308 Win in any reasonable hunting situation. I also like the 358Win, and especially the 350 Rem Mag 20" barrel model 7 alter to feed 2.920" cartridges...200 gr Barns at 2940 fps or their 225 gr at 2750fps powerful light and handy.
Working on 308 Win with MDT mag 2.980" cartridges 9 twist 22" 208 gr at 2550 fps with LC brass fired yesterday. And 225 ELDM at 2550 fps 3.030" past mag length .
230 SMK and Atips for 2550 fps the 1500 ft lbs at 8 to 900 yds with a 7.5 lb 22" barreled 308 Win 3200 to 3300 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. The 230 Atip hit 2588 fps but was stressing cheap LC brass..I am reloading Lapua palma, and Lapua LR primered brass, plus the reformed 277 Fury hybrid 80,000 psi cases today...as the LC brass was showing low SD and accuracy with the Sierra 230 gr MK ...also the Berger 208gr hybrid needs to be investigated...already running the 200.2 gr Berger 2685 fps ave 7.7 S/D .64 BC with accuracy for long shots ...but the 230s have .8 and .824 BC and really hold energy and velocity...so tne experiment with them,
The 350 Rem Mag is better for close encounters with claws or moderate ranges, better for larger game. And it's plenty accurate for squirrels, but the 308 Win is really versatile go with 9 or 8 twist accurate with 125 to 250 gr Atips on the 8 twist with the 250 especially and they are great for subsonic ammo too. Also shoot any primer with 308 cases with mild loads for pistol and modified cases for shotgun primers. Cases and even loaded rds found out in the areas where people are plinking...cheap ammo everywhere, never run out of 308 ammo.

+1 for 6.5 PRC. Recently agonized over this decision myself, and decided an 18inch suppressed 6.5 PRC will do anything I want it to anywhere in the U.S. Now it's my favourite rifle for anything up to and including elk. 308 is my second choice, and I'm thinking about working up an ultralite 308 for everything except elk and moose.

I guess I'd probably recommend .300 wsm if asked within these parameters. Don't even have one (I have a .300 win mag) but for versatility WITH trajectory and expansion ability at distance AND extra horsepower and penetration at close range on bigger critters, especially if the possibility of running shots or quartering angles is present…

A fast .30 is very hard to beat for true "do it all" performance out of a sensible weight and size hunting rifle. Big 7s are nice too but I'm a .30 cal guy.

The .338 RCM seems very practical. The 7mm-08 and the parent .308 are probably the most practical cartridges out there for 90+ percent of all hunting.

But, long range trajectory and practicality and superfluous belts be damned, if it were just for me and what I want, i'd skip all of the above and get me a handy little short rifle in .350 Remington Magnum. Would be a cute little sidekick for my very long and heavy .358 Norma. Would no doubt rattle my teeth pretty good 😁

The Ol' standby 308 sure is hard to argue.

This little 16" 308 headed to PA, had a hard time letting this one go!
