Looking to build a new rifle, it will be primarily a hunting rifle. I have narrowed it down to these two calibers 7 SAUM or 300SAUM. I have reloading components for both just need a few more pieces of brass for the 7. Leaning toward the 7. Long action, 26 in barrel , 160 -175 gr or the 300 160-180 gr. Is a 24 in barrel enough to let either cartridge live to it's potential.

I think the SAUM's are most suited to shorter barrels and suppressed applications. To each their own, but the 7 SAUM with a 20" barrel and a suppressor would be the bee's knees to me.

I recently tested a 7SAUM with a 24 inch barrel and it was impressive. You can even get a 7 chamber to shoot the 180s which would be the route I'd go.

7SAUM all the way

I have a 7 RSAUM in a Remington XP-100 with a 17.5" barrel. 2850 FPS with Berger 168's and H1000.

I did a 9" twist for shooting 162-168 gr bullets. If I were shooting primarily 175/180's I'd went faster twist.

24" would work fine though you'd gain some velocity with 26" barrel.
