New guy. Intro and plan for my first rifle.

Some replies:

Yes, I reload. Not the best equipment or skill, but have produced decent results

Mostly shoot ars that I "build" into various configuration.

Here's a grendel with a heavy bbl 24" and fixed 12x scope at 419 yds.

For the new project, initial inspection of my old savage 110, seems like the mag well cut out on the action is pretty short. Haven't measured it, but it was a factory offering in 223 rem. Staggered feed blind mag. A short search on the internet showed some people trying to use an oryx chassis with similar actions and they were instructed by mdt to machine part of the action backward in the mag well to enlarge it. Will look more into that.

Got this scope for a start with 20moa mount. Inexpensive but seems decent. 34 mm tube, 5-25, mil Xmas tree reticle. Arken ep5.

Well, thanks for the welcome!

16" 5.56 with 1-6 scope. 400 yds, aac 75 grain hornady factory load.

Same gun at 500 yds at night.

These were staying 600 yards away from me this year. I had a lightweight 6.5 grendel with me and that's when I first started thinking it might be nice to have the option of shooting accurately longer.

Of course 7 prc is a new fad, but it does seem to be a good fit in recoil, long range ballistics, energy etc. A regular existing7mm cartridge would be fine if I had one. But since I don't. There seems to be some benefits of the newer clambering versus the old 7mm rem mag. Namely twist rate and length for longer heavier bullets, no belt, shoulder angle.

So that's where the thinking came in.

Yes 7prc is the new cartridge on the market, and I'm not saying there is anything at all wrong with it. But being the new cartridge means there is a higher demand for the components and ammo. And with ammo becoming more available helps but it isn't readily available. As far as twist rate and length that shouldn't come into play for consideration because you could get a 7 rm with a faster twist and allowed to have more jump. But if shoulder angle and a beltless cartridge are important to you then by all means you have to explore other cartridges. Nice thing with Savage actions you can have multiple barrels and swap them out and have a different caliber, there are a lot of us that have similar setups as far as pre-fit barrels

Good point on the multiple barrels. That could be fun to have another caliber I already have like 30 06.

Greetings from the Great Falls side of the Big Sky Country. Welcome to LRH, and enjoy it. I built a .257 WBY off a Savage LA with Oryx; you might not need to do anything on the mag well; mine worked like a champ with no mod.

Good luck with your project.

That's awesome! I'm not too far away. Was up at great falls for a tnvc nightvisikn carbine/pistol class last spring.

Interesting you didn't have to mod the action. Maybe I won't either. How old was your savage?

Hello,

Been shooting a lot, but always within 500 yards. Do pretty well there at those ranges with cheap scopes and guns. But I want to start trying further. I have an old semi auto hunting gun in 30-06 but it's not known for accuracy.
So I came up with this plan, take my very first rifle I bought when I turned 18 and rebarrel it to something more useful.

I never shoot it anymore, after many decades (90s).

Savage 110 in 223 but it's a long action.

So, I ordered a 7mm prc shilen prefit, small shank, 26" heavy palma contour for it. Also ordered new bolt head. Next going to look for a used orxy, relieve some of the action's maxwell so it will work with it and see how far I can take that gun for some casual long range plinking, maybe some prs matches here and there for fun, and some hunting (antelope and elk).

Thoughts or tips?

Anyway, hello and look forward to learning.
Welcome from Georgia. Theres lots of folks here that tons of experience. Sounds like you got a good plan. 👍 Stay with it and report back. Stay safe and have fun!

Thanks! As an aside, my pops was in a c130 in Vietnam so we always loved them growing up. He would hear a herky bird from way out out alert us all.

Now I do it. Lol.

Here's one flying over our house.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great project, have fun with it. I re-barreled my old 300 win mag 110 to a 338 win mag, was very accurate, even more so now.

I had Shaw build me a custom (MrK 7 package) 375 Ruger 26 " barrel on a Savage action they did a real nice job, I cannot complain on fit, finish, DBM, full magnum action so I can run the longer bullets, their barrel but it was lapped. Less than an MOA during sight-in and initial break-in, haven't played with it much with optimization yet but I am happy with it. I kept the accutrigger with a lighter spring, if I had to do it again would have switched triggers, would recommend them if you want a custom Savage.

The old coyote hunting gun from college. I couldn't wait to buy a rifle. Combo package I think it was like 279$ back in the day. Replaced the scope rings with a mount because they seemed so weak. Scope sucks. A 3-9 Simmons that makes things look darker. Haha.

Not sure what the measurement is supposed to be for the bigger cartridges. Will likely just be able to tell once I plop it into a chassis.
