Getting ready to start a new build 6.5-06AI and wondering if anyone can tell me what the COAL would be using a 25-06 case with a 156 Berger Elite Hunter seated just to the case neck junction for max case capacity? Trying to understand this so I can talk to my smith intelligently about how I want this chamber throated.

Thank you for your help.

Here is the case drawing:

Here is the bullet drawing:

Now simply do the math and send a sketch off to your gunsmith illustrating your desires.

Enjoy!:);)

I would size, trim to 2.514" and firefrom 270 brass. standard 25-06 brass will most likely shorten below min. trim length as if forms to the new chamber. The 270 will .020 to put you at 2.494".

Easiest way is to run a 2506 case thru a 6.506 die. Necking up is better then necking down far as I'm concerned. To each their own though. I'm thinking of doing a 28" 6.5/06AI myself, but I'll be doing the 147g ELDMs instead.

If you haven’t built it yet, I would get it throated long. Seat a the bullet you want at the length you want it and see if it will fit you magazine. If it does send that loaded dummy round to your smith to use to match the throat length.

Thanks for your input. I have however, decided to use new Nosler 25-06 brass. There's quite a few people who feel this is the easiest route to go based on them having this catridge. One of the most notable I talked to about this was Travis, the owner of RBros rifles. He's built many 6.5-06 AI's and he also felt using 25-06 brass was the easiest. I do have several hundred 270 cases though so if needed I can neck turn them and try them as well. One of the primary factors for me choosing this cartidge over a PRC was the fact I have alot of brass that will work as well as an old 700 30-06 action.

Why not base your round on Lapua 30’06 brass? Necking down will create a nice solid false shoulder for fireforming? Your gunsmith/reamer maker should know how to size the neck.

Is mag length the driver for max throat length?

+1 on the 30-06 Lapua brass, don't worry about the short brass its no problem at all. Only problem i could see potentially is a donut necking up.
Other than that its a great cartridge.
My reamer is set up to run the 140 VLD at just above the neck shoulder junction with a .296 neck chamber gotta turn these brass but thats fine for me because I wanted the best brass available.

C.O.A.L is 3.43 if I remember correctly.

This cartridge is very interesting to me and I’ve kicked it around many times. My question is this...if there are companies offering 280ai brass is it possible to take it down and utilize brass without fire forming? I know this really don’t pertain to your question but I’m uneducated on this one. Best wishes

I'm pretty sure the 280 AI would be too long. I have used 280 brass to make 6.5-06AI. must fire form brass first (no bullet), then trim, then fire with bullet. Easier to just use 3006 Lapua as Sherm suggested.
