N00b bedding question

I think bedding the first 1-3" is great! It supports the barrel pointing error at the shank.

I agree with bedding the first inch or two past the recoil lug, but it's probably six to one, half dozen to another. My rifles are bedded that way and are capable of 1/4 - 1/2 moa.

So long as the bedding goes all the way to the stock (meaning its fully supported by the stock and not "floating" above it), I'd leave it and shoot it. You can always remove it later should you feel the need to.

Only con I have found to bedding the barrel shank is if you ever want to rebarrel... you will probably need to ground out some of that bedding and re-bed. You may get lucky with the same barrel profile, but I've always ground out and re-bed.

Your pic shows what I call a cosmetic flaw, as it doesn't "look" right.
Structurally, it will most likely work fine as is.
For future reference: To make it look more professional, build a clay dam to stop the flow of bedding compound. This works for both, bedding unddr the shank or not bedding under the shank.
As far as which method, we've done both for years and found little difference in accuracy.

Use painter's tape to tape off areas you don't want excess bedding material to adhere to, along the edge of the stock, mag well etc. I've used modeling clay over the years to do the same thing but I've found painter's tape to be easier and cleaner. The pits in your compound are likely due to your release agent if you used floor wax or insufficient mixing or improper ratios of your compound. As far as bedding under the barrel area, it needs to make consistent contact throughout the area forward of the recoil lug or you'll have pressure points. Whether you do it or don't is personal preference, it's not bad but it may not help either.

I'd personally clean it up the endges around the magazine a little with a file (cosmetic) and see how it shoots.

I agree with all the posts.

Don't know if this is right or wrong or neither, but my mentor taught me to bed forward of the lug enough to support the chamber. And this bedding should have a consistent wrap around the barrel, meaning the mud squeezed out a little on both sides, about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2" forward of the lug.

Hence Bobby Bailey's dam.

The clay dam works just build it high, press in the barrel, take out barrel, trim the bedding side square, then wax it. Wax the barrel well past the dam.

And yes, - shoot it. Might shoot a hole and case closed!

And one last thing. That stock looks like a black synthetic stock. If it has a lot of forend flex, stiffening it can sometimes move mountains.
