Took my 7 (turns 8 this week) year old out for youth weekend, and we got close, heard a couple gobblers but couldn't coax them to us. Spring break was last week, so we got out Monday and Tuesday morning before a little trip. Monday we saw a gobbler with a couple hens a couple hundred yards away, couldnt' pull him to us.
Tuesday we had a few hens right on top of us early with a gobbler not 75 yards away but in the timber. we were in a corner of a field. I thought we were in business, I figured he would come join his ladies while they pecked around in the field, but the lead hen suddenly decided it was time to go in the woods, and off they went. I thought our morning was busted.
With the patience and stillness of my boy, we were in a ground blind :) so not easily mobile. After an hour or so there were 2 gobblers in the woods close together, then one was headed our way. He must've gotten his butt kicked and was looking for love elsewhere. I called sparingly just to let him know where we were, and he was coming in on a string. the gobbles were getting louder and closer, louder and closer, the boy was getting excited! I said buddy this is going to happen, get ready. he had to almost get in my lap to swing the gun around, and just like that he popped out of the field! He saw my decoys about 40y from him and immediately puffed up to show off his stuff.
he was heading our way, then turned and strutted straight towards our blind. at about 8 yards, facing us head on, i told him to shoot. the little .410 with tss at 8 yards is quite effective! He was every bit as excited as he was on his first deer a few months ago. Not sure if he was as excited as I was though!
