im thinking i might try and stretch my .243 out alittle this year if i get time to attempt some 400+yd shots, just wondering if anyone here has any opinions on shooting 350-500yds(max) with a box stock 700 ADL syn. .243Win topped with a 6-18 Leupy target and loaded with 42.5gr H4350 under a 100gr Sierra SBT? i have taken deer @ around 350yds with the rifle but have been kind of apprehensive to shoot any further. so i was thinkin maybe this year do some shooting through the chrony and try some longer shots.

I've personally killed deer (smallish east coast deer) to over 500 yards with a 243. I wouldn't have any worries so long as you can get the bullet to go where you want.

Dave, can i ask what load and bullet you were using? like i said im using the 100gr Sierra Gameking SBT overtop 42.5gr of H4350 lit by a WLRM primer, its not a super fast load, but shoots in the .3-.4 range at 100yds if i do my part. this will be my first year with target turrets, until now i just had a 4-12 Leupy with a plex, and suprisingly somewhere in the mid 300yd range, the duplex comes in quite handy as an aiming point, but now i have my 6-18 with turrets, and exbal, so i should be about ready to have some real fun!

I don't recall all of them but one in particular I do recall was a 70gr Ballistic Tip on a doe at 526 yards. She was on the edge of a standing corn field, the bullet entered mid chest on a broadside shot AND exited. She went about 30 yards into the corn bleeding onto the stalks from both sides before she died.

I have a 243 and i can get the 105 and these 107 going about 3000 fps without any case stress using H4831. My Wyoming 6mm rem buddy swears by these for antelop hunting at long ranges. Because the BC is a full .100 higher than the 100 SBT or 105 SP. He's a real one shot kill man!

.243 dia. (6mm) 107 gr. HPBT MatchKing .243 107 .259 .527 @ 2500 fps and above
.522 between 2500 and 1800 fps
.509 between 1800 and 1600 fps
.495 @ 1600 fps and below

I suspect that the 105 gr Amax & the 107 gr SMK won't work in the rifle of the original poster. He more than likely has a 1:10 twist and these bullets require a 1:8 or 1:7 to stabilize at the velocities a .243 can reach safely.

I've used the 70 gr Ballistic tip out to 500 yards in competition with IMR-4831 and Fed 210M primers and have been able to reliably hit the 2.5" clay targets we use. Nosler now has an 80 gr version that I'm going to try. VLD bullets in the 80-90 grain range should shoot well although they may not be great hunting bullets...

Actually, I think the Remington 6mm bbls have 9 1/8" twist. I think he could shoot the 105 Amax w/no trouble. My Savage has a 9 1/4" twist and it worked.

Small animals such as Coyote have been killed beyond 1,000 yards with a 243 win. Especially when using a high bc bullet such as a berger, amax, or smk. I personally have shot targets accurately out to 1100 yards with my SPS Varmit.

Shooting Big game such as deer and antelope with a 243 would probably have a 750-800 yard limit, just because the bullet is not carrying much energy anymore.

I would give the 105 Amax's a try, they are a great bullet. They are accurate and easy to get to shoot out of almost any gun you put them in.

Here's my load for my 243 win:

105 AMAX
41gr H4350
CCI 250 Primer
WIN Brass
Load them just long enough to fit in your mag box, chances are they will shoot
3000 FPS

i have shot a lot of deer witha .243 sako, and the 85 sierra bthp. also a few with a 95 nosler partition, and the 100 grain btsp. all were pretty close though. i won a 1000 yard match with rem 700 with a a 12 twist hart barrel. the rem adl should do fine.

roninflag's rifle that won the 1000 yard match was a .243. I was there and will concede that I saw him win it. Its not as good as a BAT 6.5-284 but close. :D
