Well, Gunwerks had a sale last week on their G-7 range finder and when I asked my wife if I could buy one she reluctantly told me ok. Now I just have to listen to all of the snide remarks about how much money I spent on a range finder etc.
Anyway, I received my range finder from Gunwerks Tuesday afternoon on ups and they already had it programmed for my favorite loads. It was nice that they are only 40 miles away and got it to me in a hurry. After playing with it for about 30 minutes, I took it on a cow elk hunt Weds morning. We spotted a heard of elk right off the bat and had a potential shot at about 750 yards, but they were in an area I hadn't hunted before and I wasn't sure about property boundaries or how we would recover the animal, so we opted to not take the shot. Later I figured they were on blm and we could have gotten pretty close to get them out. We took a ride on our atv's equipped with tracks to navigate through the snow drifts and went in search of more elk on the private ranch we had permission to hunt. A couple of miles in and I spotted several groups of elk. I made my way to a high ridge and started ranging the different groups of elk. The closest bunch was 688 yards, the G-7 gave me a quick solution of 13.7 moa. I laid down, set up the bi pod, and dialed my scope. The wind was blowing pretty good but we thought it was straight in our face, (off a little on the call) the battery had gone dead in my wind meter, so it didn't help. I let fly with the 300 grain berger and my buddy called the shot, HIT. The cow went down, but then got back up and took off running with the rest of the small herd. I couldn't tell which elk was hit, so I just kept watching and then after about 100 yards, one cow stopped, started wobbling and dropped out of sight. It will probably cost me a lot of items due to you got an expensive range finder tongue lashing, but I think it is worth it. Not having to mess with a smart phone, or pda is well worth it in my book.
