Starting my trek into true long range shooting, 1000 yards.
What do I need for a weather meter/calculator?
Is the kestrel 4500 with Applied Ballistics a good start or is there something better

I might be a little bias, but you are going to have a hard time finding something more accurate than a Kestrel 4500 Applied Ballistics model. Just ask the Marines:

No, the Kestrel will operate on its own without any apps. Apps just add to flexibility.
