Is sectional density imporant?

"IF" is always a large word...

True, I did use the word "if"...

I've had numerous discussions about bullet construction and I even have a friend who makes custom muzzle loading bullets about terminal ballistics and at the end of the day it comes back to hydrostatic shock. Quite a run around considering all modern hunting bullets will do the job if the shooter can. Don't want to hijack this thread on that topic. Cheers!

... bullet construction is the key - caliber is not

Up to a point I think I understand what you mean but if Sg is a factor of the ratio of an object's mass to its cross-sectional area we can't take caliber out of the equation. Lower the sectional density, increase penetration and delivery less energy to the target. Increase sectional density, decrease penetration and deliver more energy to the target. If I'm in a gun fight with a .22 I feel more vulnerable than I would be in the same gun fight with a .45.
