Hydrostatic shock?

Looks like Turpentine21 can stay busy a while, as long as he is willing lay with em.
Those things sure learn fast, and that bullet hole is about the only thing that causes them to forget.
Been after this group for three weeks. First shot I have gotten. They've been shot, dogged, trapped etc. there are some TANKS in the group. Most of the big ones were covered up , this one finally gave me an opening.

Well I've read all 8 pages and have come to the conclusion you're all wrong. There is no such thing as hydrostatic shock. the word Hydrostatic means water or liquid that is static or motionless or a rest, so it cannot create shock. The term Hydrokinetic describes fluid in motion and no I did not come up with this on my own I read it somewhere from an engineer. After saying that I do believe Hydrokinetic shock is a common occurrence but not a guaranteed thing. the last deer I shot was with a CVA paramount and 285 grain ELR at 40 yards 2480 fps it made a baseball size hole going in and coming out, that deer ran 50 yards. when I gutted him and opened the diaphragm there was nothing but a small amount of liquified tissue. while skinning it I found the breastbone completely split and the bullet entered 6 inches above it. So all this means is crazy stuff happens. Carry on
 
That thick skin seals like a self sealing fuel tank.. If you can get a good solid rest. An inch or two below and an inch r two back from the ear hole puts them to sleep. And it doesn't take a cannon to do it.
Only lower hits bleed well on hogs for blood trails. Like 1/3 of the way up. But angle matters. High to low pass thru tends to leave a low exit which bleeds. High hits above half way up and level tend to seal quickly. Just my observations.
The best blood trails I've seen come from broadheads like the 4 blade Zwicky Eskimo shooting at a downward angle from a treestand around 12ft high. The exit will be very low and the hole doesn't seal very well with the right broadhead.

As this is a thread on hydrostatic shock I will finally post my thoughts on the topic. Yes I derail, mixture of ADD and too many concussions I guess.
I don't now whether to call it Hydrostatic shock or not and I'm afraid t throw other terms out there. It may not be the right term, But the shock or wave that runs through the animal when the bullet strikes in my humble opinion does help. I've had the breath knocked out of me to the point doing anything at the time was out of the question. Plus had enough concussions that I've been to the wrong huddle once or twice. Something like that can aid in incapacitating or immobilizing briefly and give the animal time to bleed out before it runs far, or at all.
I primarily shoot high shoulder, neck to opposite shoulder, sometimes mid shoulder. High shoulder that shock drives through that shoulder bone and into the spinal column. Of course the bullet keeps going. Bone turns to shrapnel and physical damage can occur. Either way the deer immediately falls, takes a nap, and doesn't wake up. It gives the time to bleed out.
With mid shoulder shots I like to break bone. This increases the shock value and slows the deer down. Plowing is good. Meanwhile the heart and lungs are destroyed by bone fragments and the bullet damage itself. An animal does not go very far plowing with vital organ damage.
While I don't think that shock necessarily is what kills, though it can, regardless of what that shock is called. It can incapacitate long enough to let the bullet do its job. It's an important part of the equation.
I'm no physicist. Just my humble opinion after years of observation and lots of samples. As always, I could be completely wrong!

I read last night about some animals being shoulder/lung shot, then completely dissected. The attempt was to shoot each the same, same bullet distance etc.

About 50% had blood vessels ruptured in their brain. Maybe it had to do with heartbeat/pulse timing, not sure exactly. But I know what that does for longevity.

There is something to this. I posted a study a few pages back showing detailed data

After letting emotions over ride data and truths yesterday, I was discussing this with one of my industry buddies. I shared this idea with him as part of the discussion.

Energy and shock can kill without a bullet impact but a bullet cannot kill without the associated energy at impact. He thought about that for about 30 seconds and said he hadn't thought about it that way and would get back to me

I did some research and found that pure energy transfer causes fatal internal trauma known as primary shock injury and it CAN kill without a hole in the vitals through:
    • Ruptured Organs through an extreme change in air pressure (overpressure) crushes and tears gas-filled organs like the lungs, ears, and intestines
    • Blast Lungs and nervous system: The tiny air sacks in the lungs rip apart and fill with blood, causing the body to suffocate even though the person can still try to breathe with associated nervous system shock causing myocardial infarction and in some cases brain wave disfunction
    • Air Embolism through high pressure forces air bubbles directly into the blood vessels, which can travel to the heart or brain and cause instant failure
    • Total Disruption: If a bullet impact is very close to vitals and nervous system organs the sheer power of the pressure wave can tear or disintegrate the body completely

    CAN is a big term. Yes a bullet impact is still necessary however if you do not hit vitals, the chance to kill the animal through energy and HS is still there. Bigger the bullet, the more energy and shock...more opportunity to kill. Nope, not a 100% outcome. Not much ever is.
 
Some studies have shown that hogs are very succetable to hydrostatic shock.
I do not care much for studies.
If a bullet takes out the heart or brain, that critter is dead. Accuracy and penetration mean more than energy.
But…..if it's going to stomp or bight me….bring on the energy!!!
 
I've seen about a dozen different coyotes shot through both shoulders… that had several feet of intestine blown out of their a$$hole. You can call it whatever you want…. but "shock" is certainly a part of it.
