With my luck there would be a visible fence at the bottom of the draw that signified the like between where I had permission and where I didn't. Or else I would have a cow tag and have to watch the bulls walk off.

Yeah buddy! That's the kind of thing that makes elk hunting so great... Not often a rifle hunter gets to go after big bulls in the rut, but when it happens, it's awesome... Drew the tag for that once. It was a great hunt!
