Not long before I sold my 7mmMag, I had purchase a canister of H870. Well I sold the 7mmMag and purchased a .338Mag. Problem is the H870 is now discontinued and I cannot see any loading data for the .338 using the H870 powder. I wonder what other calibers could be good candidates for H870?

Hodgdon is comming out H869 that is very close to H870 later this year. Hope this is some help of you.

elkfirst, H870 is best with the heaviest bullets in large for caliber cases. As a rough guide:
.264 with the 140 grain or heavier in 264WM, 6.5/300 W'by
7mm with the 175 grain or heavier in 7mm RM, 7mmSTW, 7mmRUM
.308 with the 220 grain or heavier in 300 Weatherby, 300 RUM
.338 might work with the 300 grain bullet with the 338 WM, 340 Weatherby, 338RUM, but probably be marginal with bullets lighter than the 250 grain bullet.

I agree it will be interesting to see how the new H869 compares with the discontinued H870. Hope the above helps. Brian.

H870 is about worthless for either caliber you listed. Unless you like to loose 100's of feet per second and burn lots of powder with the cases clear full.

Your answer to any powder and how much to use is as simple as looking at the burn rate chart. Just find a simular powder that you can find reloading data for and adjust it accordingly.

I agree with the above poster. .338 would need 275 or 300 grain bullets to use it. I might be abale to use it with 200 grains out of my 7 STW or 240 grains out of my 30-378
