Highest BC .277 bullets available

If any of you folks had to pick a bullet to develope a accurate, slow speed performing(>2000fps) possibly, on a 20" barrel 1:8.5 twist, where would you start?

I would start by saying 1800-2000 is getting to the low speed for anything that isnt intended for subsonic. Some will still expand yes but not fully. A cup and core bullet like eldm, hornady, berger etc, is likely the softest but may not fully penetrate. You probably need to read on cup and core bullets, copper bullets and bonded bullets then when you find a brand you are curious about use the seach function as they have been discussed hundreds of times. Filter the information you get by the people who have acutually used them and arent just guessing. Good luck.

Far as I know most poly tip hunting bullets will deform at 2000 fps. I would start with 150 ablr and 165 ablr if you are concerned though. The ablr has a very fragile nose and designed to expand at low velocity. The 145 eldx as well but little lower BC since lighter (still good) if care about that

Maybe you don't know what subsonic speed is? Go hard*** someone in your HOA KEC. I'm inquiring about performance of bullets when they slow down 500yds plus. Your incredible man.

Thanks for not jumping to conclusions, I guess there are people that bullets slow down the farther they get from the pipe. Here's the quick and short. Built a fast twist 270win, hunt huge canyons and would like to know what people's thoughts are on bullets that claim they expand at slower speeds. I'll just beat everyone to what they want to say, yes there is better calibers...I KNOW. I don't need everyone's opinion on what cartridge to shoot, rather I'm looking to pick people's brains on what some of these bullets actually do at them 600-700yd ranges. Barnes will tell you the lrx bullet performance at 2000 is as lethal as a broadhead of your speed doesn't knock off the petals.

Thanks for that. Exactly what I'm looking for. Claims 1650fps min. Impact. Would just have to put a block of gel out there and see what it looks like.

Easy, I assure you @K.E.C. Darkside means well, and all he is saying is to start a separate thread so whatever your inquiry is does not get buried with this old thread with different subject matter. I always keep the velocity higher than the bullet manufacturer's minimum velocity at POI to expand/perform effectively.

I have a .270 AI built in 2012 with a 30" Lilja 3G 1:8" (fastest at the time) primarily built to propel the 165/175 Matrix VLDs. I keep the velocity >1600 FPS. If I do my part, it's .5-.7 MOA to 1000 yards. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. It will take some trial and error but I'll find the highest bc bullet that 8.5 twist will stabilize, and be soft enough to expand when that ol 270 slows down before the rest.

I picked up a Tikka 270 WSM hunting rifle recently and have been playing with mostly monolithic bullets. Its sub moa @ 3300 fps with a 130 gr .540 G1 bullet, which isn't bad for long range hunting.

For those who are interested here is a list of commercially available .277 bullets with G1 values greater than 0.5 listed in descending order, the list is likely to be incomplete, so feel free to add to it or add your experience hunting with em.

170 Berger hybrid hunting .662 (1:8 twist required)

Someone came out with a 160gr bullet that the 1:10 barrel is supposed to be able to stabilize. Cannot remember what company, Sierra maybe ???

The 170 gr. Berger only need a 9 twist. I have been wanting to shoot it out of a 270 Win. with 10twt and see what happens.

Yeah, my barrel is 1:10, and I'm usually in the mountains but the heavies are a no-go. The 130 Cutting Edge shoots very well. Supposedly the 150 ABLR will work, I haven't tried it yet but plan to. As far as Matrix goes, I thought they stopped producing .277 bullets?

The 150gr ABLRs out of our .270 AI, are the go to bullet for our rifles; Lilja 26 inch 1:10 twist, 3100-3300fps. The barrels on our rifles are factory contour so after two shots the third one will go for a walk at 300 yards. I will see if I can find the photo of the ladder target.
