Looks like I will be loading for 308.
20" Remington 700 heavy barrel with PWS muzzle brake.

What is the best bullet / powder combo to start with for all round shooting
out to 700 - 800 yards ?

Would the 168 grain HPBT Sierra or Hornady be a good choice ? Amax or ?

Blc2 powder or ?

What is the expected velocity ?

Appreciate the help

Thanks

Varget, RL15, AR Comp, and 4064 are four greats that come to mind. My 168 Amax load is 40 grains of AR Comp in Lapua brass with a Fed 210M. OAL is 2.805". I'd expect to see 2500-2550 fps with a 168 in a 20" bbl anything above that is a bonus.

168gr berger hybrid, Match King or A-max over 44 gr varget. I get about 2700 fps out of a 22" barrel. It is good out to a good 600 yrds. Past that the heavier bullets rule.

I use RL15 and VN140 too but always go back to varget.

for hunting I use the Berger Hybrid Hunting.

the long range guys shoot 175 gr and above bullets. I don't shoot long range with my .308. I like the 6mm's for long range. I am allergic to recoil. After 10 shots with that .308 I am done.

Excellent info
Thank You

Berger 168 VLD, 44.0gr of Varget, Federal 210M, Lapua brass, seated to 2.200" (base-to-ogive) using a Hornady comparator.

Should be a good place to start.

Many powders shoot well in .308. It is difficult for me to find one that won't shoot. That's what keeps me on the .308, very versatile cartridge to load for. You may want to look at IMR 8208xbr. It is very accurate also in my .308's. Like I stated, It is hard to find a powder that won't shoot. The 168 and 175 gr.Sierras shoot well as does the Bergers. Look at Sierra's accurate loads for any given bullet and start there. Good luck and enjoy the .308. Every one should shoot one!
