Hello gents, I am having a 300 wsm built on a remington short action rifle by pac-nor. I would would like your input on how much leade or free bore I should have also the neck diameter I should request!
I am planing to shoot 165 bullets through it, using norma brass. From the info I found online I am thinking .340 neck with zero freebore or leade what ever you guys call it. Does this sound about right?
Thanks
Dustin

All depends what you want to use it for.
For Hunting Rifle Min. SAAMI Spec chamber no neck turn is what I use. With an HS mag box I can load 175 SMK's to the lands and fit in the mag.
I also use Norma Brass. Groups with this combo are insane from 100 to 1K.

Do you know the SAMMI specs for leade and neck? I have heard it is zero for the leade. And around .340 for the neck is this true?
What is the diameter is the neck diameter of your loaded ammo using norma brass?

I don't know the exact specs, a loaded cartridge (no neck turn Norma brass) is .339 so on the 340 neck thats only a half thou all the way around too tight. I believe my neck is about .343 that's 2-thou clearance all around. For a hunting rifle it's about perfect. It shoots sub 1/2 MOA most groups being 1/4 MOA. The first time on paper at 1K it went 6 inch for five shots with four shots at 2.25"

I was happy to have JB as a witness.

Call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Guage (who makes some of the best reamers) and ask him what he recommends.

My guess is 1 1/2 degree lead, min SAAMI chamber with probably .340-.342 neck (think factory is around .346)and he can give you the exact amount of freebore for the 165s.

Here is Dave Kiffs company URL.. It has a contact link on the site

suggest you get on it when you can. Tell him exactly what range of bullets you are looking at for example 165-180 Hornady SSTs, Scrirrocos, Norma brass etc.

Define your ideas as best you can and he will mail you a reamer design spec sheet with your name, after that it is about $135-150 and 30 days to have it. Tell him you do not want to neck turn but not as loose as factory chamber.

If you cannot get it, PM me with specs, and return mail address. I will call him and fax the info to him and have him mail it to you ASAP.

Are you out of MCBC LeJeune and 2 MEF? If so guess you are due to come back in March? Two of my tactical Saftey specialists are there now with 2nd MAW and 2nd FSSG.

John Myer at Custom Gunsmithing in Boyce VA has the no neckturn Norma Reamer in his shop now. He is a top recommended smith. Go to www.6mmbr.com and look under recommended smiths links. His email and POC info is there.

Good luck and safe return.

Definitely look into what bullet you want to run. For instance can be over .100" difference in seating depth between bullets.

In my Remington 300 WSM the 180 SST hits the lands at 2.865" while the 200 Accubond hits the lands at 2.980" if I remember right.
