My son and I were very fortunate to be drawn for the first annual walk-in draw self supported Elk hunt in the Wichita Mountain Refuge. It was an amazing hunt. After stalking a good group of bulls for nearly 3&1/2 hours my son had a shot at 170 yards. He was carrying a Browning Abolt medallion in 7 rem mag. He was shooting hornady trophy 162 grain. Bull fell in his tracks.
Day 2 we went back in to find the same group and I was able to get a great shot at 275 with my Browning Abolt 300 win mag. I was using Federal premium trophy bonded 180 grain rounds. Fired and my bull fell 8 yards further. It was an awesome experience for my sons and I. My youngest son was able to catch it all on film!

That's awesome. Thanks for the pictures. I'm partial to the 7mm rem mag. Glad to hear your sons 7mm Rm took care of business.

We started out in Zone C and we tagged the first bull right at the back of C. I took mine across into D. Pretty rugged terrain to get back there but we ended up moving the truck over by a lake just west of the holy city and were able to take a ranger road for the pack out of the second bull.

Very nice. I didn’t know there were elk in Oklahoma.
Elk in the Wichita Mountains, Black Bear in the "Winding Stairs", antelope in the Western Panhandle, a few Mule deer in the northwest and white tail and Rio Grande turkey everywhere. Not nearly as many prairie dogs as there was 30yrs ago, but plenty of pigs and coyotes....

They are even developing an elk herd in the eastern part of the state. I visited with the RMEF rep for our state and he told me they already have a good number going out there. We also have bobcats and mountain lions. My son and I have seen them on more than 1 occasion.
