Hello,

As we all know there are several different "wildcats" being worked on in regards specifically for "2 Mile" shooting.

Soooo what is everyone's take on which is more important........MV or BC??

THEIS

Muzzle velocity is the most important.

no wait,

Ballistic Coefficient is the most important.

no wait,

MV

oops

BC definitely.

MV, yeah, that's it for sure.

OK, all joking aside. What trade offs? Sacrifice weight for MV and it reduces not only the MV but also the SD. Sectional Density is important factor in both MV and BC.

BC is killer.

In every cartridge there is a kind of bullet weight zone where if you go heavier you will loose some start out velocity and go sub sonic early .
If you go lighter you start out faster but loose energy and velocity faster .
Some place in that sweet zone is a bullet weight and BC that gives you the max range possible to stay super sonic and going lighter or heavier does no better .
Asking if BC or velocity is more important is like asking is the barrel or action is more important ? It's a null and void question as both are required .

I look at utilizing the rated BC of any given bullet as long as possible in flight, this usually is a balance of a lighter.

Just my opinion
Cheers

Hello,

IMO the "key" is that neither is independently more important than the other, BUT one can be improved by the other while the other cannot be improved by one :)

MV can directly improve OR degrade BC numbers given by manufacturers but BC alone cannot directly improve OR degrade MV, so that would IMO make MV more important when we start speaking on advancements and improvements in regards to cartridge design.

What is the reason "ELR" projectile manufacturers "typically" do not list their projectiles BC every 100m from muzzle to subsonic, but they do list the "initial" BC based off of an "initial" MV...so why do they not list out the downrange BCs based off their utilized MV???? Is it because they know that projectile sheds BC rather quickly when it reaches a certain velocity, making that better BC projectile not so much better at that point with that MV :)

Is it because they know that projectile with its great BC is designed to be optimum in the velocity realm from initial muzzle velocity to velocity of 1800-2000fps..once it slows past that the BC is horrible.

How many projectile manufacturers provide an average BC in which it covers from muzzle velocity to subsonic velocity?

NOW you take that same projectile that sheds BC horribly once it reaches 1800-2000fps velocity and you launch it 300-400 fps faster MV than the manufacturer calculated its' BC at and you can get a whole other beast :)
The BC numbers change, the degradation distances change, etc etc

...................................................................................................................

Next question/comment in regards to the ongoing wildcat quest on this forum :)

Given same case design..
Do you go larger diameter with heavier for caliber projectile or smaller diameter with heavy for caliber projectile lightbulb
OR..
Do you go larger diameter with lighter for caliber projectile or smaller diameter with lighter for caliber projectile??

The joys of brainstorming :)
