CRF Action variations- History Question

Hey guys,
Which CRF action is more authentic to an actual Mauser action, a CZ 550 or Winchester Model 70?
I recently started studying into CZ firearms, because I have never owned any much less been around anyone with a CZ. I grew up shooting Winchester Model 70s that were CRF and a few cheaper push feed models.
I have been recently researching Mausers themselves, and from what I have found out is CZ was made to produce the Mauser rifles in the approx 1920s near the WW1 and WW2 era. This has me wondering how much variation is there between the actual mauser 98 action, model 70, and cz 550. If my findings are correct, cz has lineage to mauser productions so I would assume the 550 would resemble the original 98 more than the Winchester. Just been doing alot of reading on the history of mauser 98s and CZs. Thanks

Well, CZ certainly did make Mauser 98 and 96, I have examples of both here. The VZ24 action is a sort after action due to it's metallurgy.
None of the CZ 550 actions are true 98 copies, they are based on 98 design, but not the same. Triggers are different, safety is completely redesigned, just like the Winchester 70 is different.
The blade ejector in both are differently placed and differences are more than not.
The only similarities are the 90° bolt throw, as other designs have 60°.
I build my large wildcats on CZ550 Safari Magnum actions, 3.850" standard length which is customisable to handle 4" long cartridges or made single shot to handle whatever you like.

Winchester 70 is a CRF action and that's where the similarity to a Mauser ends. The CZ 550 is a true copy of the Mauser 98 action.

I've owned five CZ 550 rifles in a variety of long and short action caliber. .270, probably the most accurate rifle I've ever owned,30-06 my best friend owns now and a 6.5x55 I hunted many states with and a.308.all of them had a butter smooth action that was dead nuts reliable. Happily I've passed them to friends and family who can use them for the next generation of young hunters.
My only remaining CZ 's is a 22LR 453V and a 527 in 6.5 Grendel. The mini mauser isn't as slick as it's big brothers but its reliable, accurate and deadly.

Didn't Mauser sue (patent) the 1903 Springfield design and the Springfield became the basis for the Mod 54 which became the Mod 70 action? So I'd say the Winchester. Just thinking out loud. Cheer

Yes, the 1903 Springfield pretty much stole Paul Mausers designs and the US told Paul to stuff it (WWI)! So they and other US manufacturers were pretty much free to incorporate those pieces of knowledge. Even Remington has elements of those early Mauser ideas which shaped the bolt actions along the way.

Just for the record, Mauser never sued The U.S. When the Army realized that the 1903 Springfield design violated a number of Mauser patents, they made a voluntary onetime payment to Mauser. The principal patent that was infringed was the stripper clip, magazine and bolt safety designs.

By the way, DWM did sue the U.S. around the same time claiming the spitzer bullet design violated patents they held and, in that case, the Army did tell DWM to stuff it.

Interesting and I have read over the years about some trouble betweem springfield and mauser. I have 3 mauser 98 action the have been converted to other. 220 Swift, 25/06, and 308NM, and 6.5x55. One 95 action, in 7mm, and I just left it like it was made.

You did not mention this one for comparison, the Montana Rifle Company action is a CRF. I have a 1999 ASR in 308.
Over the course of the Wuhan pandemic, they were sold, moved to Michigan and came out with a redesign, the 2022.

CZ also contracted with Montana Rifle Company to build the model 3. They were all WSM cartridges if memory serves me right. Beautiful gun.
