Just saw this elsewhere and stunned by it.

The "qualifications for "sharpshooter" are:
Those who advance through the application process then must complete a shooting qualification hitting small targets the size of an elk's vitals at 200 and 300 yards. Those attending the qualifying shoot must hit each target three times in a row without a miss within a three minute time period.

"This qualification has proven to be difficult for even the most seasoned elk hunters," said CPW Area Wildlife Manager Rick Basagoitia. "This standard is likely the minimum allowable standard given the difficulty of the work we need volunteers to do."

Are freaking serious? Sharpshooter is considered if you can hit a so called SMALL TARGET 12" pie plate eg size of elk vitals at 200 and 300 yards? This is what CO considers as "sharpshooter"?

So hold off those LR or ELR builds if you want to be a CO Sharpshooter. No mention of minimal cartridge etc which is crazy as well.

I dunno, maybe me.

So what is this " sharpshooter" position they are trying to fill?

elk reduction program - see link above

And yet many that try to qualify....won't.....lots of hunters like to THINK that they are snipers...but when the rubber meets the road they're not what they think they are.

I think calling this "sharpshooter" is what most think is absurd relative to the description of the testing. If you want "sharpshooters" conduct testing as such not as "Joe Blow" off the streets. This wouldn't even qualify for local "Turkey Shoot" at a sportsmen's club.

When did they start the application period for this program? Only details I could find on it were: that it is in and around the sand dune nat park, it's on a volunteer basis only, you may be required to volunteer for up to 2 full days, you must be at least 18 and pass a bgc, you can keep any anterless elk you shoot during the program, you must pass the shooting skills test. -- I did find an application link to see what all was involved and its already "closed" at this time. They claim they can only do the shooting skills test for 25 people per day.

I did this qual last year, it was frightening and very eye opening how inefficient and ineffective most people are that head to the hills with firearms. I think this is a case of living in our own little worlds, when you primarily associate with like minded people we start to assume that everyone is like us and then you join the masses only to be immediately let down.
