Consistency with my 300WM???

Beat me to it. I'd definitely start hear. And your mounting system. Especially if you're getting some good groups, and some crappy groups with the same exact load. If your groups are wondering around the bullseye, that's a tell tale sign also.
Groups haven't been anything to write home about since that time with the hammers....but the scope is gonna be my starting point....

180 Barnes try 7828 you'll be happy close to or at max charge you will have to find the jump the rifle likes.
The 168 TTSX as others have said will punch through elk and moose at any appropriate ranges where velocity is where it needs to be. I currently use the 168 TTSX in my 300WM have never recovered one on elk or moose.
I've got some 7828, I can definitely give it a shot...pun intended....
Try shooting groups of 5-7-9 -etc. and see what happens. Are you using a chronograph? That could really help you diagnose your problem. Have you run ladders or an OCW? Looking for equipment problems is human nature but I feel like you're leaving a lot on the table. Consider that many of the powders you have listed are temp sensitive. Are you taking this into consideration (see chrono)? Enjoy the ride!
Yep, I've got a chronograph....went back and looked at some of my numbers, the IMR 4831 w the 180ttsx numbers weren't so good, ES of around 50-60, SDs in the 20s.
The 166HH with IMR 4350 were really good...I attached one of the groups with numbers on it...
I'll usually go in half grain increments to find max loads...
Then loads groups of 4(gives me 1 screw up shot) in half grain increments in the velocity range I'm looking for....then start working with the best group of that batch.

I started out .050 off because that's what Barnes recommended.....my other jumps were probably a little too far now that you mention it. I normally start closer to the lands with a lead bullet.....usually around .01-.02

All rifles feed information! It's up to us to listen!
Absolute quote of the week!!!!

Thanks for all the responses guy, I appreciate the help, hopefully get started diving into this next week, with scope change, and some different loads/powders to try.

Lots of good advice. Suggest pick one bullet, stay with it. The Hammer 166 clearly showed you rifle is capable. IMO, stay with it, it will do the job.

Like several have stated, Hammers really shoot best in scrubbed barrel. This is a well proven statement. Mono's are nothing like cup n core and really do not need fouling.

Suggest clean barrel back to clean bore, run a ladder with the Hammers to first sign of pressure, back off 1 grain, shoot for grouping. Read the Hammer recommendations on seating depth, they DO NOT CARE about jump. I have personally proven this in 4 different rifles. My 20 year old Sendero shoots 196HH 1/2MOA with 0.095 jump that has 1200+ rounds thru it. Make sure you have at least 3PDR's in neck. Also HIGHLY recommend crimping in valley between PDR's. Most do 1/8-1/4 crimp pressure with 1/8 being prevalent. Lee has inexpensive crimp die that most used with great success.

Do not overlook bit faster powder for this load since Hammers can generate faster velocity with faster powders. Check out listed load data in link. Good luck!

Hey guys,

I got to the range this week and did a little work.

Full disclosure….I didn't get a chance to change the scope, we had my 2 little nieces this past weekend, so I had to play my funcle role.

Completely cleaned the barrel, copper and all. Loaded up 6 rds each of 2 loads.

70.0 and 72.0 gr IMR 4350

166gr Hammer Hunter

Virgin Peterson Long Brass

Figured I'd do 2 3 shot groups but if I had a boagie I could shoot 4 shots. Ran all 12 across the chronograph. Shot 70.0gr, then 72.0, 70.0 then finished with 72.0.

First group(70.0)I was stoked, 2nd group(72.0) was so so( I pulled one shot). 3rd group(70.0) was so so and 4th group(72.0) was only 2 shots.

I'm including pics of the groups….the groups aren't horrendous, I guess I'm just not sure why I can get a 1/2in one time and then 1in next... literally the next group.

Plan to change scope this weekend just to verify…

What say ye?

Thanks!

Scooter

Some barrels like to get "seasoned" or have a good deal of fouling of a specific jacket material. Some don't. My brother has a 308 Win that won't shoot well. He needed to use monos because he lives in Cali. But 2 moa was the best that barrel would shoot with any bullet. So he just shot it alot without cleaning it to get practise and then swap the barrel after it burned up. After awhile it started to shoot .5 moa consistently with his GMX load. He cleaned it and then it went back to 2 moa. Other barrels like to be clean when shooting groups. So maybe a quick cleaning with a bore brush after each group. I'd ask the Hammer guys what they think.

i would lap the barrel with J-B to get clean. Try some Rem or Win factory to rule out reloads.
My .300WbyMag likes IMR 4350 and 180gr Partitions at 3050fps.

So....I got to the range this week, and my scope is good.....😁
Started with a clean barrel again, just to make sure all was the same as last week.
I've got dad a good load worked up with 200gr Accubonds and had a few extras loaded so I tried those.
I shot 3 3 shot groups waiting for barrel to cool between shots.
I didn't get a chance to run across the chronograph though, but I'm really pleased with the accuracy.

Now... finding 200gr Accubonds...that's another story. Anyway, I'm gonna try some 200gr ELD-X and see how it goes.
Unfortunately, I guess this one just didn't care as much for the 166 Hammers....
