Cold Bore Challenge

"With your best field rifle, known range & favorable conditions (good visibility, light to no wind, prone on bi-pods, time on your side); how far do you feel you can hit a 6" circle with your coldbore shot (no sighters) with a 90%+ confidence (you'd be willing to put up a $100 bill on hitting it)"


I have taken a challenge upon my self to try this no matter the conditions. 20 shots on 20 different days!

I will be doing a video documentary on my progress


Today I shot from 587 yards, In very windy conditions.

Cool challenge, if nothing else it should be some great practice, I will defenitely keep followin this.

By the way how do you like that stock? I've been thinking of one myself. I just looked at the AX AICS and it is nice but I don't know that it is as nice as what they want for one.

Do the mags fit in well, any feeding issues?

dam good shootin, I thought ya nailed it, would have if it was a jihad. not the nicest wind you were shooting in and ya called that good. I was gonna call 600 for myself but now I'm second guessing. I'll give it a shot this weekend and see how it goes.

I think this is a good idea. A excellent way to find out how well we actually can shoot. An overall "valuable" training experience. The first shot is the one we need to make count. I will be sure to follow this thread, and also try this test for myself.

What rifle, cartridge, and bullet are you shooting?

I bet that a lot of people on here with $5K or more in their rifles would have trouble with this challenge too... LOL

You might notice that I haven't volunteered to give it a try...

Actually I have a rifle that I might have tuned up and ready for a challenge like that in a month or so. It's shooting under a half inch at 100 and that was with with Lake City ammo and it's sure to shoot better with my handloads.

Starting in mid-July I'll hopefully have several days off a week and can do something like this... I suspect it will be a humbling experience...

In fairness to you though.... The wind here in north Florida RARELY blows like you seem to have constantly so it will likely be much easier for me here.

By the way... Congratulations on your courage to do this... Not many people are willing to show their misses and document stuff like this...

The rifle is a factory Remington 700 SPS Varmint, Sitting in a a McRees Precision Stock, and a Timney trigger.

Shooting a 168 Sierra MatchKing over 43.5 gr of Varget.

I tell you what, when you are only going to take one shot and then go home. you think about it a little more then just going out and shooting gun)

So it's a 308?

The one I hope to try with is a 700LTR in 223 Rem and I'll probably be shooting either 55gr V-Max or 60gr V-max but I have a bunch of 69gr Matchkings here as well.

Powder will undoubtably be Varget and I have a bunch of Winchester brass and a couple hundred Lapua cases as well.

I have other rifles that I can use for this but this one is showing a LOT of promise and is easy and cheap to shoot.

I love this sort of stuff!
You learn a great deal from missing and nothing from a dead center hit.
Those are deceptive conditions you are shooting in Clayne B!

If I have learned any lessons in LR shooting it is to invest significant time in observing before I dial my dope. I have also learned you can not rush the shot. Slow is fast! When I am shooting very long range I go so far as to draw a little map illustrating feautres and my best guess as to how they will affect the shot (feel free to laugh at me ) .
When I have a feel for what the mirage, grass, trees, leaves, are doing (near and far) I then take my reading and dial my dope. The thing is it takes time to do that, so before I get on the trigger I recheck the conditions. As I lock on target and start my squeeze I am watching the mirage as much as I am the target.

For those curious if a 338 Lapua with 300gr Bergers would have stayed on target (with the same error) the answer is probably. The 308 has about 27 inches of drift at 500 while the Lapua has 13. So what does that buy you???
About 200 yards at that range.
The 300Win with a 230OTM? About 150 yards.

It is still is very much the shooter.
