You depress the trigger and push down and the little barbs at the bottom spring out

I've just verified through other sources. It is a Hay spear or a harpoon for picking up bales of hay, which makes absolutely no sense considering a bale of hay is heavy and this is probably another 20 pounds. Lol
That extra weight doesn't matter as it's part of the rigging to get the hay from the hay wagon to the hayloft. The rope, trolley, pulley and tractor does the lifting. Later years when guys would get a semi load of hay or straw, the driver would just use curved spears and send 8 bales at a time. That's back when a crew of three kids would each get a penny a bale, once the hay was stacked in the barn. If ya got 1,500 bales stacked, each kid in crew got $15 bucks. Guy would pay for a free lunch at the Saloon around noon.

Never thought about that one but yes if it's part of the rigging to the barn loft that makes perfect sense.

Wasn't as far back as a penny a bale, but we got a nickel, and yes, had to be well stacked in the barn. Sure wish I had those days back once again!!

They need to make another Halloween movie just for that thing!
Absolutely! Jason Vorhees and Micheal Myers would definitely get into a bidding war at a garage sale over that thing! There would be collateral damage. Hey, that's could be the plot for the next sequel! Hopefully, they will leave Jamie Lee Curtis out of it. She's looking pretty rough these days.
