Bullet drop

Being very new to long range shooting, how does one compensate for bullet drop. For that Canadian that shot 3500 meters, I'd figure that the bullet drop would be almost 500 meters. Is it as "simple" as sighting in at 2000 meters? Put a 50 MOA rail?
