Im starting to put together the components for a rifle. Getting ready to order a barrel.

Its going to be a 300wsm with a 24" barrel.

IF you had a choice between a 1:10, 1:11 or 1:12 for a 180 grain hunting bullet such as accubonds, partions ect which would be preferable.

or am I splitting hairs

1-11 twist will be fine for 180 grains. If you plan on shooting anything heavier than 180 a 1-10 twist would be better.

If you ever wanted to shoot mono's, a 10 twist would be optimal for the 180 class bullets. I would personally go with a 9 twist which is what we are running in a couple 30-338 lap imp's. That would give the option to run something bigger such as our 215 Hammer Hunter. Just my 2 cents.

Guys above are right.

If you go 1:11 you will be stuck with 180 gr bullets for the most part.

If you start shooting true long range, past say 600 yards, you will want a heavier bullet. A heavier bullet is not such a bad idea inside of 600 yards either. I shoot Berger 210 VLDs with a 1:10 twist and is about a perfect combo.

If you ever want to start shooting the 215s though, you might want to look at a 1:9. Especially if you hunt and shoot at low elevations.

I'd go with a 1:12 twist.

.308 Win's have shot 190's from 1:12 twist barrels leaving at 2600 fps and shot MOA at a thousand.

+1! I shoot 215 with 1:10"; my range is at 3K' and hunt between 5K' and 7.5K'.

My 8 pound 300 Win Mag's 26" 1:13 twist Obermeyer .3070" groove barrel shot Sierra 180 HPMK's with max loads into sub MOA 10 shot groups at 1000 yards.

You need to check on what the bullet manufacture recommends for the gr. Of ammo that you will be shooting I shoot 338 lapua and the 30 nosler and the 300 wsm and a 270 wsm and I always check on the bullet I plane on using before I pick out the twist of the barrel if not you may in up something your not happy with

The bullet's RPM rate plays a big part in the accuracy it has. Fast enough to keep it stable to the target but not so fast that tiny unbalanced ones won't jump off the bore axis when they leave.

Consider the 30-06 shooting 150 grain spitzer boattails at 3000 fps. A 1:13" twist is perfect.

I wish bullet makers would list 2 or 3 muzzle velocity band's and twists. Winchester and Frankfort arsenal was smart choosing a 1:12 twist for their 308 Win and 7.62 NATO shooting the same bullets the 30-06 uses leaving 100 fps slower. No wonder the 308 broke all the match records held by the 30-06 in the first two years in competition from 1964 to 1966.
