On the Savage rifle, I see the term small shank, what exactly is a small shank Savage rifle?

It is actually the standard shank and is 1.062 dia IIRC.
The large shank came about for the WSM family of cartridges. They are larger than the Mag dia family of cartridges. The small shank has a barrel nut that is 7/8" in length while the large shank barrel nut is 5/8 in length.
