USDA (United States Dept of Agriculture) and FSA (Farm Service Agency) offices local to you, can give you soil types, what will grow there , what characteristics are of various trees. Free service. They usually have a supply of printed information that may be useful to you. They also will test any soil samples you bring and if you tell them what you want to plant, they will tell you what you need to do to prep your soil.
