Just opened another box of 22lr to shoot out of my 1971 Ruger 10/22. It's all original. A little scratched up after all the abuse I've put that poor thing through. I checked my gun log and I was shocked to see that this gun has just gone over 7500 rounds through it. Holy mackerel! Never thought I would see this day. I got a new Teslong recently and had a look at the barrel. The bore and barrel look like it did when I passed 1500. Surprised to say the least. Boy did Ruger make a good one here. The best part, it can still pip a bullseye at 175 feet with open sites. And I was thinking about a new barrel. Naahhh.

I got a used 10/22 40 some years ago that didn't look very new. Used it with open sights for several years before putting a $30 4x Bushnell sport view scope on it. Got a job in TX panhandle after college and had a favorite prairie dog spot I would hit about every other Sunday afternoon. Almost to the round, every 10k rounds the crosshairs would fall out. Went through 3-4 of those scopes before putting on a leupold. Can you wear one of these things out?

I bought a Marlin M60 when I was 11, and shot at least a brick a week every summer and at least a brick a month until I was 16 and needed to pay for gas. I had a job every summer and spent nearly every dollar I could come up with on ammo, and I rode my bicycle to town every time I needed more ammo before I could drive LOL. After I could drive I shot probably a brick a month until I went into the service. My mom and dad's back yard was carpeted with 22 brass, several inches deep in places, I could shoot out to 150 or so from the yard and the hill changed every rain so there were new rocks and sticks and whatever else to shoot at. I would clean it once or twice a season, but to keep it running I would drip oil into it before I shot it every time I shot it. The first 40-50 rounds it would fling black crap everywhere while the oil was softening the crud and it was getting pushed out of all the tight spaces. I could beat everyone I knew shooting a game of HORSE with that rifle using open sights regardless of their equipment, it just shot where I was looking. The ejector wire wasn't working good the last maybe 6-8 months before I went into the service and it would close on the empty every 2-8 rounds. I recently took it apart and cleaned everything really well, reset the ejector wire and it runs like a champ again. I'd hate to know how many that rifle has through it. My son, who is a way above average shot, and I took our 22's and shot steel out to about 175 a few months ago. His M60 has a 4x Japan Tasco on it from probably the early 70's and is a superb 22 scope. I cleaned his clock on the steel open sights offhand with my old rifle and it isn't because I can see the sights well anymore LOL.

Lead bullets in a .22 barrel will last forever. Some people won't ever clan and accuracy only gets better.

I went with my buddy to the store and we each bought two Rugers! The 10/22 for plinking and the Ruger 44 carbine for pig hunting. Both super quality rifles.

my 10/22 is an unknown number above 10K rounds. My daughter even did a bunch of 500 round boxes each day. So when she turned 12 I bought her one and now she is 37

Them there are rookie numbers.... well less so in these expensive ammo times.

I fish some really remote parts of Alaska, with long desolate run times. Never really was much of a TV guy, and didn't have the vices usually associated with my industry so we plink while we travel. For entertainment we shoot 22s at various flotsam and jetsam. The amount of random stuff floating out there can make a trigger finger sore.

Back in the good old days we once bought so much rimfire that the Toyota pickup it was loaded in struggled to drive it to Seattle where we loaded it on a north bound boat. While Toyotas aren't renowned for load capacity, exceeding it with 22 and 17 is still a point of pride.

I'll use the late summer season of 19' for example, we were gone 34 days fished 23 of them and left port with 2 1022s and just shy of 8k rounds. 1022 #1 took a headed off the dash when we caught a funky wave in a streak knocking out the red dot glass on the first day. We returned with half a box of mini mags and a partial box of the 42 grain hunting loads I was testing. Not sure what that correlates to in 22lr per nautical mile... but it has taught us things about 1022s.

That summer we learned that around d 6 k rounds the volquartsen takedown barrel began to peen and mushroom so bad it couldn't be pulled apart. Had to file a ridge every 2-300 rounds or it ceases to be a takedown. My own theory is that a firing pin wears out on a 1022 from bulk ammo around 22-26k, having had a few wear down and several chip around that marker.

We figure, we don't drink or smoke and while out don't commute or have any other forms of entertainment. Couple grand in ammo for a salmon season seems to keep everyone happy and tuned up for grouse in the fall.

I've got a pretty kewl 10/22 story! in 1979 my girlfriend asked my dad to help her (we were 16) buy me a new 10/22 for Christmas. He did and took it apart, placed into three different boxes to keep me from guessing what it was. She had it all wrapped nice and pretty and I was WOW couldn't believe that she got me 3 presents.

I was shocked when I opened them, the family all had a huge laugh, one of the most AWESOME Christmases ever. Still have that old 10/22 and that girl ~~~~~~ YES SIR, sight right there on the couch reading one of her girlie novels!!! EVERY American should own at least ONE 10/22... I have others but that one is pretty special

Yup I know about being 16 and having to decide on ammo or gas. Hhhmmm... Oh well, for a short time I put a 1x6 lpvo on. Went back to the open sight. Liked it better.

What kind of anal freak are you to even ask that? It's only at 7,500. Chill man, chill. Another few thousand to even break it in.
I have cleaned it. A bunch. But I'm not sure if there is really a "break in" point. Kinda like the everready bunny. They keep going, and going, and going...
