I have read a ton on this caliber in the last couple days. So much that it gets confusing. I wanted to start a thread so I have some specific info readily available and the most current. I am getting a rifle built with a 24" proof barrel. So what loads are you guys running from shorter barrels? Do you have a preference in the VLD or eldx or h1000 vs retumbo? I know some will recommend 4831 but this will be a hunting rifle and even with a short barrel an extra 100fps would be great. Also worried about velocity variance due to temperature.

Thanks for any info.

My cousin has a 6.5-284 with a 28" barrel and a shooting buddy has one with a 25" barrel. Both of them shoot 58gr of Retumbo, the 28" barrel pushed 140gr ELD Matches at 3040fps and the 25" does 3022fps with 140gr Bergers. My cousin is currently shooting 147gr ELDs at 2950fps with 55gr of Retumbo. I think you'll be able to get 2950-3000 with Retumbo and a 140 grain.

I have one with 26 inch barrel

I get 2975 with a 140 VLD and 57 grains of Retumbo in a 26". My particular rifle doesn't like H1000 but many others have had great results with it . I can get mine over 3000 but accuracy and ES go down the toilet quickly.

I have had good results with RL19 and 26 but only get about 2750 out of a 24 inch barrel in a Cooper 22 and it shoots 1/4 groups at 111 yards when I do my part.I would go with a 26 in barrel if you can change it.good luck

I've had great results with CCI BR2's . I wanted to use Federal Match primers but couldn't find any . The CCI's work so well for me that I'm not switching. They give single digit ES with both Retumbo and H4831 .
