I have been using that bullet in two different 378 wbys both shoot good with 110 grains of h-1000

2700 fps with a 26" factory barrel 3/4" groups at 100 yds
2810 fps with a 30" custom barrel 1 1/2 5 shot groups at 300 yards

Thanks for posting the Quick Load info and actual results on this round.

I don't have one, but I am close to buying QL. I am very impressed that the QL MV calculation is within 1% of the actual result posted by fasttrax88. Given the number of factors involved, astounded might be more descriptive.

Trying to find some load data for the 378 wby with the sierra 350 gr matchking? not much on the internet anywhere.........

thx

That is because most people are not badass enough to shoot a 378! 378 was on my short list of dream rifles when I was a kid. I wanted one in a mxv deluxe. When the 375 rum came out I bought one of those in an XCR and ended up selling it after some bad gunsmith experiences. I now have a custom and love the big 375's what are the details on your rifle?

I was wondering if someone can comment about the powder type vs. felt recoil from the data ?

For example, just looking at the Norma powder data

MRP2...... 2729 fps.......60k psi
204.........2679 fps.......63k psi
217.........2573 fps.......46k psi

I could imagine times when it would make sense to give up 150 fps to soften the recoil, if this actually results in a 20 - 25% reduction in recoil (using the pressure number).

Is this felt recoil vs. peak pressure a viable indication ? Yes of course there is the effect of bullet mass x velocity, but sometimes there are other factors as well.

The other interesting thing for me is H50BMG. The reason this is interesting is that even when a lot of other powders were not available, this one often is. Is it correct to assume that since about 15% of the powder is unburned, it will "flash" in front of the barrel, and leave a lot of fouling mess, or will it largely be blown out of the barrel ?

if recoil is a consideration you are shooting the wrong gun. Get a brake and shoot a full power load. otherwise sell it and get something you are comfortable with.

I wish life were that easy. I will probably only purchase one more good quality rifle setup, and it will likely be used by not only me, but also family.

My approach is to buy a bit more gun than is needed and use hand loading to tune the result for the task. It isn't optimal, but doing it this way, I can cover a lot of ground with 2 rifles.

Thanks guys for the information. I have a Mk V that shoots great and I was looking for a caliber between my 30-378 and 50 cal....like maybe a cheytec, but thought maybe I could turn my 378 into a longgggg ranger with the 350 gr sierra. I ordered a box, so we shall see.

Digging up an old thread; any updates on your 378? I am considering building one for long range hunting.

This is a 338 LAI I have. If I did a 378 it would be similar build to this. This rifles weighs 11.5 lbs including scope. I would run a 30 in tube on the 378, so probably 12 lbs. out the door.
